The story about his father made you feel uneasy every time Pete left. Like his father, Pete, known more as Maverick, was a fighter pilot for the government. During the Vietnam War, Duke had been shot down and was considered missing in action ever since. The exact circumstances of the crash had been classified, so anything pertaining to it was unknown to your friend.
"Don't tempt fate," you said as you said goodbye, knowing how Pete was, "You don't know what's coming."
"You say that every time, and I'm telling you I know what I'm doing," your friend, brushed aside any misgivings you possess; took you in his arms and kissed you on the cheek, "I'll see you in a few weeks."
And that's exactly what Pete said to you every time.
