Good intentions, good deeds, are not always rewarded. It was no secret that Aerys II Targaryen was completely insane and thus got the title of 'Mad King'. This stemmed from his unpredictable and murderous rule. He developed a special predilection for executions by fire.
The day Jaime killed the Targaryen king was the best thing that could happen to Westeros. By doing so, he prevented the Mad King's last command from finding its execution. Before his death, the king planned to destroy the capital with wildfire. The king's last hand, Rossart, had already set up several hidden camps inside the city. The king seemed to believe that the inferno would turn him into a dragon and he himself would destroy his enemies.
And, to prevent this and to do the right thing, Jaime gave up his reputation. The thanks was a new name 'Kingslayer'. Since then, the Lord Commander of the King's Guard was known as the Mad King's Assassin. Everything else, did not interest, because no one knew why this one did it.
"One day, people will know," you told Jaime and began to smile encouragingly, "And it will stop."
