~Chapter 2~

*The Mates*

"What is the point of showing up so early to a lecture that does not begin until 9 o'clock?" Ashton questioned as they walked up the steps to a building.

There was half an hour until their class began, what was the purpose in showing up so far ahead of time? If he had a meeting with his advisors at 9, he would show up at 8:55 with everything he needed in order, and the advisors would be let in to the room at nine sharp. He didn't get the purpose of wasting so much time waiting.

"I need to pick out our seats and make sure the room is secure," Luke finally snapped. Ashton had been asking the same questions all morning and it was starting to get on his nerves. Luke didn't want him to question what he said, he was used to saying something and having his client obey. Usually, at least in the beginning, they were too scared to do otherwise, why couldn't Ashton be docile like the rest of the people Luke protected? "If we wait until lecture starts, we can't sit together and I won't get to choose where we sit."

"Why does it matter? Why can we not sit any place in the room?" Ashton asked, stopping at the door and looking at Luke. Luke gave him a confused look before bringing his arm up exaggeratedly, pulling the door open, like he was showing an idiot what to do. Ashton ignored his tomfoolery and walked through the door. Luke grit his teeth, realizing the kid was probably used to having someone open the door for him. He wondered if Ashton had ever done anything for himself before.

"Because I said so." Luke didn't feel like explaining his whole process to the civilian. Ashton didn't need to know that Luke had to make sure he sat in a good place so he could watch the door for anyone coming in. He didn't need to know that Luke needed to see if there was a second way they could escape from if something did happen, or that he always checked every room upon entry for bugs or other things that could harm them. That was why Luke was there, so Ashton didn't have to worry his pretty little royal head over anything.

"The classroom is this way," Ashton called as Luke stalked off in the other direction. They were in room 103, which was to the right, that's what the arrows in front of them showed, but Luke continued going the direction he'd been heading.

"Hurry up," Luke tossed over his shoulder, expecting that Ashton would follow him. He slowed down a bit and reluctantly the little prince did, but of course, he had to complain the entire way.

"Where are we going, Luke? I just told you that the classroom is over in the other direction,"

"I wanted to see where the bathrooms were,"

"Oh, I see." Ashton didn't understand why he could not have just said that. He was so secretive and always in his head, Ashton just wanted to understand what was going on. He did not like doing things for seemingly no purpose, but he would be more willing to be cooperative if he knew what was going on.

Truth was, Luke wanted to see the layout of the building in person. He'd been given blueprints of all the buildings in the school that he'd memorized, but seeing it in person was never a bad idea. This building appeared to be a circle, because even though he went the wrong way, they still ended up in front of their classroom.

Only one other person was in the room when they arrived, a small girl who sat in the front center. Luke dismissed her immediately after observing her for a few moments. She was just an anxious freshman nervous about her first day. It explained the hunched over way she sat in her seat, jostling her leg, and the planner, highlighters, pencils, and notebook already organized on her desk. She barely gave them a glance when they walked in, instead, burying her nose in the book she'd been reading. Luke rolled his eyes when he saw it was the class textbook.
