You gaze out to the horizon, studying the silhouetted mountains in the distance and watching the trees of the Mirkwood forest sway gently in the warm breeze of spring. In the distance you see an outline of a certain elf making their way towards you from the palace. Your lips quirk up in a smile and you stand up from the flush grass. You start to walk towards him and quicken your pace to a run to see him doing the same thing. You finally reach him and outstretch your arms, wrapping them around his neck and pulling him into you. You feel his arms wrap around your waist tightly. Once you eventually leave the moment of tranquillity, you pull back to look at his face. "I've missed you."

Legolas smiles down at me. "Welcome back."

Your smile falters and you look down to try to hide it from Legolas. But it is in vain when Legolas frowns and lifts your chin up using a slender finger. Hesitantly, you meet his gaze with wide eyes, feeling your heart beat rapidly.

"What's wrong, my love?"

"N- Nothing. Is it hot? I feel hot." You quickly change the subject and step away and sway dizzily, and quite certainly would've fallen if not for Legolas' quick reaction.

He holds you up with an arm around your waist and he puts a hand to your forehead. "Are you alright?"

Legolas moves to guide you in the direction of Mirkwood but you dig your heels into the dirt and grasp his hand. "Everything is quite alright. Please, let's just enjoy this moment we have together."

Legolas frowns and is about to protest before he looks into your pleading eyes. Slowly, he pulls you to the ground with him and looks at you with a small smile. "We can do that."

You stare at him a while, forcing down the tears that are threatening to spill. You know it's the last time you'll ever look at him this close-- as if he was really here by your side.

You watch as Legolas' perfect eyes crinkle at the corners in confusion and you look at him properly, not realising he was watching you watch him. Legolas puts a hand to your cheek and looks into your eyes. "My love, now I'm really getting worried. Please tell me what troubles you." Legolas' own eyes were tearing up and regret immediately washes over you.

You hold the hand that's still resting on your cheek and lean your face into it. "I just love you so much. And it scares me." You whisper the last part, but Legolas hears it anyway.

You blink slowly up at him as he shifts closer to you. "I will never stop loving you, (y/n)."

You feel the tears coming back, tightening your throat. "That's what scares me."

Legolas stares at you for a moment before closing the gap between you and kisses your forehead. "There is nothing to be scared about." He whispers in your ear before pulling away to look at you sweetly, before sobering up slowly. "It's time."

You nod quickly and swallow the lump in your throat. You squeeze the hand you're still holding, your body shaking as you try to hold in your sobs.

"I don't want to leave you."

Legolas smiles sadly at you as his gaze darts from one eye to the other. "I know."

You let the welling tears fall down your face now. "I love you."

Legolas leans in towards you, resting his forehead on yours, your noses touching.

"I know." He whispers.

You pull away slightly to look into his eyes.

"We'll meet again." You say, half wistfully and half promising.

There was still so much you wanted to say, you didn't want to leave, you couldn't. You weren't ready.

Legolas nods slightly and smiles the brightest smile he could muster as his eyes water. You adored how he could smile at you like that, even when the world seemed to be upside down, even when you both felt like dying. It made you love him even more, if that was even possible.

"In another life." He replies.

Before his lips reach yours, your surroundings fade and you're suddenly back in your world. In your room, on your desk. No trees, no meadow, no spring, no Legolas, and no promise of a happy life.

You finally release the gut-wrenching sobs you had been holding in for what seems like ages, feeling a slight relief. The cold tears spill over your eyes. And you let them fall.

we'll meet again... in another life

... even if it wasn't real.
