Referencing themselves being duos, Ice Climbers fight two characters from a given universe in each stage. To go with the duo theme, both Master Hand and Crazy Hand are fought.

After just finished climbing atop the Infinite Glacier, Popo and Nana, the Ice Climbers, cheered in victory.
Ice Climbers: YAY! We did it! We did it!
Popo: Man, I thought we'd never finish climbing that mountain.
Nana: Well it was rough. That I'll guarantee, but we had each other to get through it all.
Popo: We make the perfect duo.
Nana: Yeah. Nothing beats our teamwork.
The Ice Climbers were silent for a moment.
Popo: So... what do we do now?
Nana: No idea. We spent so much time trying to climb this mountain, I guess we've lost sight on what we had planned next.
Popo: Hmm, I guess so.
Nana: Well maybe we could find a new hobby.
Popo: I like that idea. We spent all this time climbing mountains, we could definitely find a new hobby for both of us to enjoy together.
Popo called for a condor to take him and Nana to new location.
The condor later dropped them off at a place called the Great Plateau.
Nana: Such a nice, warm place.
Popo: Yeah and such a nice landscape.
The Ice Climbers noticed a tower in the distance decided to climb it. As they climbed the Great Plateau Tower, the Ice Climbers were ashtonished by the amazing view upon reaching the top.
Ice Climbers: Wow! This is so amazing!
???: Halt!
Frightened, both Ice Climbers turned around slowly to withness a long-haired, blonde princess with a white and pink dress and with her, a man wearing a blue tunic who held a sword and shield in each hand.
???: Identify yourselves.
Popo: I-I'm Popo, t-this is Nana. W-We're the Ice Climbers.
???: Ice Climbers, you say? Hmm... I'm a Princess Zelda and this is my bodyguard, Link.
Link nodded.
Zelda: May I ask what you guys are doing here?
Nana: Y-You're not gonna hurt us, are you?
Link: That depends if you're friend or foe.
Popo: We're just two buds trying to explore to find a new hobby.
Nana: We tend to do things together as we like to think we're the perfect duo.
Zelda: Perfect duo, huh? (giggles to Link)
