"It could be anything."
"It's definitely the intake valve," Pope's eyes widened imploringly at the only mechanic who was willing to spend the night fixing his truck. He knew it was the intake valve, after all, he was the one who undid it.
"I'm not sure-"
"If he says it's the intake valve, then it's the intake valve," Bianca narrowed her eyes at the greasy pot-bellied man in front of her, arms folded across her chest.
"B," The Heyward boy spoke, nudging her side warningly. This was the closest auto repair shop within their vicinity and if they screwed this up, they would be stranded in Charleston for who knows how long.
"Look, little lady," The man began calmly, ignoring the scowl that formed on the girl's face at the moniker. "I can put a rush on it, but it's going to cost you a little extra."
Pope opened his mouth to protest, but Bianca quickly cut him off, "How much?" She demanded.
Meanwhile, JJ made his way over to Kiara who was sitting alone in the back of a truck, staring aimlessly into the starless sky. A small frown formed on her face when it dawned on her that the bright, twinkling lights she'd grown so accustomed to back home were a little harder to see with all the light pollution. She was drawn out of her thoughts when the blond Pogue's footfalls neared.
"Shouldn't you be helping Pope?" Kiara raised an eyebrow at him, nodding in the direction of the said boy.
JJ followed her gaze, a small scoff falling from his lips where Bianca, despite her small stature, made the mechanic cower away, "Nah, I think B's got it," He chuckled, shaking his head lightly. Kiara didn't say anymore, merely returning to staring into the distance and wringing her hands together.
"Middle of nowhere," JJ huffed, leaning forward on the other side of the truck. "Dude's in heaven right now, 'gotta know the calibration point before you do anything with the intake valve, JJ,'" He mocked the mechanic's nasally voice. "You do the-" He suddenly frowned when he realized the girl wasn't listening at all. "Hey, you alright?"
Kiara's eyes finally darted up to his, sighing softly, "My mom is so worried that I'm going to be a Pogue, that she's willing to send me to boarding school."
"Well, that's what you get for hanging out with the wrong crowd, Kie," JJ tutted, pulling out his silver flask with the same two 'J's engraved into it and taking a swig.
"I mean, I'm not going to go," Kiara's frown only deepened. "It's too late anyway. I already am who I am."
JJ watched her carefully, glancing over the girl's shoulder at where Bianca stood beside his best friend, "It ain't all that bad," The corner of his lips twitched upwards, closing the cap of the flask. "Just look at that guy over there."
