"There it is," Kiara piped up as they neared the long, winding dirt road. "Angel Oak."
The Twinkie shuddered and the Pogues glanced out the windows at the tall greenery surrounding either side of them. They eventually came to a standstill when the middle of the beat-up path dipped, allowing swamp water from either side of them to spill over onto the road.
The tires creaked to a halt and JJ inhaled a sharp breath while Pope groaned. The girls who had previously been quietly conversing in the back, mostly filling in Kiara on everything that happened, perked up at this.
"Oh, shit!" John B cursed, lightly punching the steering wheel. "Tides coming in."
Bianca's peered out the side window at the depression of wheels indented into the mud." Wait, guys- look," She explained, causing the others to glance out their respective sides. "Those are tire tracks. Limbrey must have already come through here."
Pope straightened his spine in alarm, "Guys, we gotta go."
JJ hummed, his eyes flickered from the puddles the tracks made in the ground over to John B, "What do you think, Chief?"
"I'm thinking it's looking a little dicey," The brunet's gaze narrowed as if assessing the situation.
"Yeah, I'm gonna have to agree with that statement," The blue-eyed Pogue nodded.
"Yeah."
"Okay, clearly, they made it," Kiara chimed in from the backseat. "No?"
"In a two-wheel drive?" JJ shook his head. "I don't know about that."
"Why are y'all acting like you're not going to do it anyways?" Sarah suddenly piped up, a slight grin on her face. She shared a knowing look with Bianca, both Kooks having been subjected to the terrible decision-making of the others time and time again, "Like when have y'all ever done the safe thing?"
John B turned to his best friend and scoffed, "She's got a point."
"Alright," JJ conceded too easily. "Speed is your friend here, okay? So, put her down in second and hammer down, brother."
"Stick to the high ground in the middle, John B," Pope added.
Bianca's heart began to beat a little faster, "Yeah, there's no way you're making it across that," She deadpanned. John B's Twinkie, with its cracked windshield and faulty engine, was hanging on by some duct tape and friendship. She was sure it was bound to fall apart at any moment.
"Okay, tone it down with the pessimism, will you?" John B's eyes darted to hers through the rearview mirror as he shifted gears. "We're gonna make it."
"Yeah," Kiara reached for the handlebar attached to the roof of the vehicle. "I'm manifesting it."
