Chapter 14: Propose (Michael's POV)

Amelia sure as hell is a woman of her word. She came to that law firm party as Josh's date, not mine. And she spent the whole night by his side. She smiled at whoever he introduced her to, she stood right there with him. They talked, he said something to make her laugh, she linked their arms.

And all I could do was watch as she did all the things with him that she's always done with me. As my girlfriend and my assistant, both. But it didn't matter because it was with me. It pissed me off beyond belief to see her doing all those things with someone else, even if I knew they meant nothing and were merely a formality. After one point, I was just over it. I couldn't stand seeing her so bubbly and cheerful around him, attending the party and meeting everybody as his date. I envied him.

So I left the party. I called it a night, used tomorrow morning's practice as an excuse, and I left. I had just started the car and was about to drive off when I patted my pocket for my phone and couldn't feel it. I closed my eyes, groaning softly. "Shit." I left it at the bar. I glanced at the entrance and saw Amelia.

She huffed, her chest rising and falling with heavy breaths. She ran. She spotted the car and gathered her dress, walking over. I thought of locking the doors on her so she couldn't get in, but I recognized my phone in her hands. She opened the passenger door and climbed in, sighing and resting her head against the seat, holding my phone out. "You left it inside. Josh's date probably shouldn't be chasing you to give you your phone but Josh's date is your assistant. Here. Take it."

I took it and then locked the car so she couldn't get out.

She turned to look at me, her face blank. "Don't worry," she said slowly. "I already said bye to everybody. Can you drop me home?" She put the seatbelt on and ran a hand through her hair, leaning back and closing her eyes.

I stared at her and shook my head softly before starting the car. When we reached her apartment, she didn't get out right away.

"Michael."

"What?"

"I need the day off tomorrow."

"Why?"

"My parents are flying in. We're all going to Cameron's for the day. She has something to tell us. So, I won't be there tomorrow."

"Fine," I agreed. It's her family, I can't say no.

"I think she's pregnant."

I turned to look at her. "Cameron is?"

She nodded slowly. "I think so. It makes sense. They've been married for four years. Cameron always said she wanted to wait four years after getting married. I think she is pregnant. They will land ten in the morning, we're going to meet them straight at Cameron's. I know you have practice early tomorrow morning, so I..." She shrugged softly. "I can be there if you want. For your practice."
