(After Dinner)

Wilhelmina's POV

Mr Langdon had just taken his first victim for their interview. To be honest, I was scared, the way his assistant spoke to me earlier showed me that they weren't here to mess around.

"Ms Venable, please come with me," Mr Langdon's assistant said, as I walked out of the common room, to try and get some alone time but clearly, she had other plans for me.

"I didn't think my interview was until tomorrow," I stated plainly, as I stepped into her office. The pair of them had taken two huge rooms and temporarily converted them into their offices, I'll admit, it pissed me off. They just came here and did what they liked, as if they owned the place.

"It's not, but I wanted to talk to you really quickly," she replied, sitting behind a desk and motioning for me to sit across from her.

"And what could you possibly want to talk to me about?" I raised an eyebrow.

"I just wanted to apologise for earlier. I shouldn't have snapped, you were only asking a damn question for fuck's sake. It was just a rough trip here and I'm quite tired, to say the least, but I am truly sorry," she smiled slightly.

"A rough trip how?"

"On the way here, our carriage stopped beside a woman, she was holding a baby and another young child stod holding her hand. Michael and I got out and we then realised the baby was dead. The child and herself were so deformed from the radiation, it was almost hard to look at them. Well, she begged Michael to take her daughter's life so's she wouldn't have to suffer any longer,"

"Well did he?!" I asked alarmed.

"No. We said nothing and just went to get back into the carriage but then the young girl stopped us. She ran up to me and took my hand. I hadn't been looking at her but when I did, there were tears in her eyes. It wasn't the tears that made me stop though, I saw myself in her, a broken ill child, with no one capable of caring for her. I didn't even think, I just turned to Michael and took the gun from his pocket, before shooting the girl right in the heart. However, she didn't die straight away, she stood for a moment and spoke to me before finally falling asleep," she whispered, tears collecting in her eyes.

"What did she say?"

"She said 'thank you'. There are children up there that are being thankful to die and no one can do anything!" she sobbed quietly.

"You did the right thing in killing her," I whispered back.

"I know. You should go before Michael finds you here and thinks I've been leaking information," she sighed and unlocked her door, as I stood up to leave, "Oh, and you can just call me y/n. I know you're still referring to me as Miss l/n,"

"OK,"

"I'm sorry, again," she offered a slight smile.

"It's fine," and then I left.

Although she infuriated me, I had just seen the strict facade of Miss l/n break, and what did I see? Myself. I thought back to what she had said about seeing that child in herself, and for the rest of the night, I could only imagine that it was me who she had killed.
