I took a deep breath as I sat on the couch. I had asked Kol if I could see the books on Slayers, which he had agreed on instantly. There were quite a few leather bound books on the legends of the Potentials. The books told stories of the God Al-Qaum. He was the god of War and the Guardians. He was the one who chose the slayers.

"Al-Qaum." Kol read from next to me. "Why him? Isn't he Arabic?" He questioned. I nodded, tracing the picture of the symbols.

"The Slayer legend came from Saudi Arabia." I told him. "The Muslims would pray to the God for guidance in protecting their families from the creatures that walked the night. Back then they didn't know for sure that you were day-walkers as well." Kol chuckled.

"Do you read Arabic?" He asked, glancing at the symbols I was staring at. I nodded.

"It's still embedded in my mind. But it's more complicated than that. Some Arabic is considered new, like as a language grows, it gains branches. New formats." I told him. I pointed to a symbol. "This is the symbol for Sacrifice. It speaks of the sacrifice of women to protect their young." I read the scripture. Kol hummed, looking over my shoulder. "This one speaks of the Potentials as Guardians of the village. They treated us as soldiers. We had posts to guard." I traced the symbol of protection, my eyes glossing at the memories. "I was in charge of the children the majority of the time."

Flashback-

"Echo!" I turned around with a smile on my face seeing young Irina running up to me. "Guess what!!" I bent down and picked her up.

"What is it Irina? Did you finally talk to Erick?" I asked laughing at the little girls gossip I received every day like clock work. I had begun to look forward to it. Most of the children ignored me since I was a soldier. A guardian. A Potential. When I was there, I was working. They knew not to talk to the ones working. It was frowned upon. Like they were distracting us. But Irina never listened to the rules. Always told me Rules were meant to be broken.

"Daddy has put me in the line up for Initiation! I get to be like you!!" I frowned looking at the young 7year old. Her small hands grabbed my cheeks as she looked at me in concern. "Why are you sad? This is good!! I want to be just like you when I get bigger!!"

"That's great, Irina. I'm not sad. I'm proud of you!" I forced a new smile out. "When is the next Initiation?" I asked. My thoughts on the fact that I didn't agree with the recruitment of such young girls. They had their whole childhood to play and be free. And here they are still bringing young children into this inner war.

"Tomorrow! Daddy said that I need to be brought in as soon as possible because of the last group of women." I smiled at her sadly. The last group of women had died from a vampire invasion. Vampires thought we were a joke even if we could take most of them.

The next day I found out that Irina didn't live past the initiation. They had held her under too long and couldn't bring her back. I had never cried like that since my mother died.

Present Day-

"Hey- Are you okay?" Kol asked, noticing my silence. I blinked back the memories and closed the book.

"Yeah. Just memories. The one thing I could never run from." I told him.

"I'm sorry, Darlin'." He said, understanding I didn't want to talk about it. I nodded grabbing another book.

"It's okay." I went to open the book but was stopped when Niklaus and Elijah walked in.

"You haven't killed him yet?" Niklaus joked. I rolled my eyes at him.

"Don't tempt me. I like Kol, you not so much." I muttered. Kol grinned, his arm wrapping around my shoulders. Niklaus growled.

"Get ready. You're only alive right now because you have shown useful." He walked out at that. No explanation or anything. I looked from where he stood to Elijah who sighed.

"Our father, Mikael, was brought back to life by our dear Mother. He is an Original vampire who has been made to kill us." He explained. I raised my eyebrow at him, before looking at Kol.

"We need help killing him." Kol clarified. I let out a breathy laugh.

"So I'm only here to kill your father. Lovely." I said, standing up. Kol jumped up quickly. Elijah leaving the room to leave us to our argument.

"That's not the only reason you're here." He said as he stepped to me. "Ever since I met you in the woods- I can't get you out of my mind." I looked him in the eyes. Thinking back to the day we met.

"You tasted my blood." I told him. "That's why you can't stop thinking about me. Kol- You're a vampire. Your brother even said you wanted me as your toy." Kol took a deep breath through his nose.

"That is not what I said!" He exclaimed, his hands in his hair in annoyance. "I don't want to toy with you, Echo."

"You want my blood." I clarified. He went to speak but I reached over grabbing a glass, breaking it on the table before slicing my arm with it. I lifted my arm up to him, watching his eyes stare at the glossy red liquid coming out of my arm, veins popping up under his eyes. "Go ahead, Kol. It's what you want right?"

"Are you crazy, woman?!" Kol exclaimed pulling his eyes away from the cut. He pulled his shirt off and used it to press to the cut.

"You're a vampire, Kol. Blood is what you want. Just take it. I'm not your toy to play with, take what you want." I told him, trying to pull my arm from him. Kol grabbed my shoulders tightly and made me look at him.

"Stop it. Stop letting the inner slayer talk. I want you, Echo. Not the slayer. Not your blood. You." He said, his eyes hard and staring into my eyes. "Stop looking at me like I'm just a vampire!! I'm not just a creature to slay!" He took my hand and placed it on his chest. "I breath." He said. Then he released me, holding his wrist to his mouth and biting it. "I bleed. See??" He held it up to my cut. "Same color blood. We both bleed red. If I'm a creature. What does that make you?" He questioned. I stared at his wrist, watching as it healed slowly. Red blood left behind on his pale skin. He was right. What am I? The inner Slayer in my mind was trying to tell me we were different. That I was here to kill him. But how is that true? We weren't that different.

"We're both dead." I breathed. Kol stared at me.

"We aren't that different, darlin'. You need to see that." He breathed. And I was seeing that. But the question in my mind, What am I?
