it's just like seeing her
for the first time again

You asked me today, where have I seen you before?

You asked me today, where have I seen you before?

     I didn't answer.

I was scared you had figured out who I was. I didn't want to blow my cover, not when I was an enemy in your home.

But you didn't say my name like I thought you would. You stood in front of me, squinting your eyes—they're really beautiful—and no words were uttered. I sat with my breath frozen in my chest. My heart felt like it was about to jump out of my ribcage. The grip on my wooden clutch was just a little bit stronger; I thought I was going to break it.

I didn't want to kill you. Not when I had grown this strange attachment to your daily visits, to your daily updates and check-ups.

But I would. I was going to. For the sake of moving forward.

I remember your own answer to your own question:

In a dream, was what you said. You clicked your fingers and stood tall, a bright smile on your lips as if you had found an answer to a century-old question. A thousand years ago.

     I understand what you mean.

     At least- I think so.
