Chapter 16:

Burning Candles

...

Previously. . .

"We can't let him win. Not tonight."

A pair of deep brown eyes slowly darkened as she nodded, pulling whatever strength she had for her mission. "Whatever it takes," she answered softly.

Determined, the young witch gave him a sad smile and left to find the enemy.

Damon clenched his teeth and hung his head down as he stood alone in the middle of the empty hallway. 'I'm sorry,' his mind whispered as he closed his deep blue eyes. Biting down the guilt blooming inside his stomach, he opened his eyes and watched silently as the young girl headed towards her death.

...

Hearing the snappish tone in his voice, the younger Salvatore narrowed his eyes and purposely hit his brother's shoulder as he passed by him. 'Ungrateful bastard,' his mind thought as he walked through the dancing crowd and headed outside for a moment to himself. The sound of the gym's door closing echoed loudly behind him as he stepped into the empty parking lot.

The cold night air instantly hugged his tired body, wrapping him in its embrace as if to offer him comfort with its soothing cold. Stefan looked up at the dark skies above him and couldn't help but let out a deep sigh as he let his mind wander through his tumultuous emotions.

To know that Bonnie's going to die because of their plan, a heavy bitter taste instantly flooded his mouth, causing him nausea as he thought about how they're willing to send a young seventeen years old girl to her death. 'This is wrong,' his mind whispered. He cupped his mouth with his hand, trying to suppress the bile accumulated in his throat as he let out a shaky breath. 'This is wrong. She's just a kid. Hadn't she have enough?'

Suddenly, not far from where he was standing, the sound of someone arguing snapped himself back from his gloomy thought. He averted his gaze towards the edge of the school parking lot and couldn't help but noticed the familiarity within one of the said voices. 'Isn't that Jeremy's?' his mind murmured. He straightened himself up and quickly ran towards the commotion.

Sure enough, the young Gilbert boy was arguing with someone, shouting at them for their weird behaviour. Jeremy pushed one of the men off him and was instantly punched on his cheek. Stefan rushed to his younger friend and stopped the other man in the middle of his track. "Hey! What's going on?" he asked, keeping the other man at bay as he glanced at the injured boy.

Jeremy wiped away the small trail of blood and saliva on the edge of his lips. He straightened himself up and scowled at the group. "I don't know," he said as he looked at his silent classmates in disbelieve. "No matter how many times I try to stop them, they keep picking on me. They seem unresponsive though."
