I recently came back to writing Upon the Gaze, and I was happy to see a lot of love and support initially, and I appreciate all the people who read my story and reached out with very sweet comments.
However, I've noticed that more and more of these messages have been negative comments, people expressing a dislike of my story or writing style. I certainly appreciate the comments few and far in between that have been very kind and appreciative, but I can't overlook the sheer amount of people who literally have nothing constructive to say about my story.
Honestly a part of why I left to begin with was because I didn't like the kind of crowd my story was beginning to attract. Understandably, it is a bit of an odd story with it being about romance, serial killers, and overall emotional instability, but it doesn't mean an author deserves that amount of disrespect from its readers.
Between receiving several dozens of negative comments for each chapter and people clearly not understanding the purpose of a self insert story, let alone those same several dozens of people expecting me to constantly update. Apparently it is more enjoyable to read through an author's story and pick every detail apart and complain unconstructively through every chapter, instead of simply moving on to a new story that suited their fancy better.
I never would have expected Upon the Gaze to have gained such a massive reader base, and for that I am grateful, but I also did not write this story initially with an intention of going so far with it. It grew into something that I actually wanted to write with nurtured content, and carry a legitimate story through, not just a simple smut that people could skim through and then complain that not enough was happening for their particular taste.
It's been extremely draining to read through each chapter's comment section, to receive so much backlash, to be told the story or written choice of an author is unappreciated, but then to be expected to continue writing in a way that would please every single person who would ever come across this story.
I greatly apologize to those who have been very supportive, and I'm so glad that I was able to write something that you could connect to and enjoy. I'm not saying I will be completely ending my writing here, but for the time being I need to put my focus elsewhere in life and not become caught up in trying to please every reader on this platform. I may still upload the last few chapters I had been working on, but I definitely do not feel to be in the right mind space to be writing chapters either the supporters or instigators would be pleased with.
