Julia Yvonna Alexandra Buchanan was born on 6 April 1996 in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. Her father David Alexander Buchanan, is a English-American Lawyer and her mother, Diana Buchanan (Née Yuliasari), is an Indonesian Pediatrician. Julia has a younger brother, Richard Buchanan. He is 3 years younger than her.
As a baby Buchanan and her family lived in Bandung, Indonesia because of her mother's job. She attended public school there before moving at the age of 9 to a boarding school in London, Brighton College. Buchanan then continued her studies at the University of Cambridge, majoring in psychology. At the age of 19, Buchanan graduated early from college.

Buchanan dated One Direction member Harry Styles from 2014 to 2016. The two met through a mutual friend in London when Buchanan watched one of One Direction's concerts. Then, in March 2016, Buchanan dated Andrew Garfield for 3 months until May 2016, when the two were introduced by their managers. Despite the sudden breakup, they are still very much friends.
In 2016, Buchanan was rumored to be dating her co-star from The Bronze, Sebastian Stan, but Buchanan denied the rumors, saying they were only close friends. Not only Sebastian Stan, but his pal Chris Evans, Back in 2015, when they were filming Avengers: Age of Ultron, Chris Evans was rumored to be dating Buchanan.The rumors were never confirmed by both sides.
