If You Could Tell Her

Dolores laughs awkwardly, shoving you off of your bed in the process. You look up at her with your brows meeting, confused at the sudden action. Her hands covering her cheeks, she avoids your gaze.

"It's a mystery to me how you still don't have a boyfriend." She whispers, peeking at you before looking away. "Or why you don't answer a single one of your tons of suitors."

You let out a laugh, propping your head on your hands as you lean your elbows over the bed. "I'm too busy with you and taking care of our baby. Right, Blanca?" You whisper as your white, seven-year-old cat walks over to sit on your lap. You stroke her back as she settles.

Dolores smiles as she watches, hearing the low purring of your cat as she enjoys the attention. "I'm sure I haven't been keeping you busy at all." She says as she moves closer, your hands brushing slightly as she pets Blanca. "And Tristán is so cute, not like the other boys."

You roll your eyes, moving back slightly to look her in the eyes. "Please, just because he helps me out with my café doesn't make him any different. They think just complimenting my looks will get them somewhere." Moving forward to push back a lock of Dolores' hair that came popping out of her ribbon, your eyes meet.

You speak once again, a smile on your face as you search her eyes. "Mariano's quite like them, complimenting Isabela for her beauty and grace... There's much more to a woman than that."

She grunts before wearing a pout, pulling away from your touch. "Mariano's nothing like the other men in town." She says with a defensive tone, ready to fight you for the man of her dreams.

"Yeah, because writing poems and cheesy one-liners make him very special." You say with a laugh as an annoyed expression clouds her face, reminding you quite a bit of her mother. "Here's an example Dol: Isabela's intelligent. She knows much about her gift, even about different plants she's unable to produce. Ask her questions about it, she'll still be able to answer. Men could choose to center around that, instead of the typical beautiful compliments she gets."

Dolores nods in understanding, letting out a sigh as she lies back on the bed. "You say that, but it obviously worked on Isabela nonetheless... seeing that they're in a relationship right now."

You really didn't take Isabela as a woman who would give in to such typical flattery, but you didn't know her enough to try and start a debate with your best friend about it. "What would you compliment about me... if you were a man trying to court me?" She asks, turning to you with curious eyes.

You let out a giggle before smirking as you look back at her. The eyes were truly a window to the soul, just like what all the books say. It was so easy to read her, from the way her eyes looked, to the gestures she made that expressed the way she was feeling.

"Wouldn't you like to know?" You ask, thinking over if it would be a good move to answer her truthfully or try to let the conversation drop.

Not many men had tried to court her, it gave her a sense of insecurity. Especially because her prima was still getting all the attention despite her already being in a relationship.

"Yes, I'd like to know. That's why I asked." She says, sarcasm coating her tone with a not-so amused look on her face. She was itching to know your answer, primarily because she knew how picky you were with it when it came from suitors.

You had a way with words that she adored. That was mainly the reason why she was so attracted to Mariano in the first place. Growing up with you had left such an impact on her that she started looking for qualities in a man that reminded her of you.

Although Dolores admitted he could never come close to you. You were one of a kind; someone that always knew how to calm her down, knowing the perfect thing to read to her when she had insomniac nights, what to say when she needed a bit of lifting up, and read the most romantic of poems when she felt lonely.
