You smile at Dolores, her hand tightly holding onto yours, shaking slightly in nervousness. The two of you stood outside of Casita.

Everyone inside was doing their best to be quiet, hoping to at least surprise the woman even once. You and Isabela made last-minute efforts, hoping to at least make her day. It wasn't entirely fruitless.

"You're beautiful." You say as you pat her back gently, speaking soothingly.

"It's so quiet, I feel like I've never felt this kind of peace outside before. All I hear is your voice and nature. Almost like I didn't have my gift..." She whispers back, her eyes shining brightly under the moonlight shining above her.

Just like the sea, when you look into her eyes, they reflect the moon in her beautiful orbs as she looks up.

"Even if my celebration hasn't started, you've already made me so happy." She states before turning to look at you, her nervousness slowly fading away as she finds peace and comfort in your gaze.

How she loved when you looked at her so intimately.

"Well, I'll make sure to keep that momentum going." You whisper, pulling her hand closer to your lips and giving a chaste kiss on the back of it.

Something changed between the two of you, that much Dolores was aware. And it terrified her because change invites risk and may lead to an uncertain future.

The two of you were already happy as you were in the past. And change was the one thing she begged not to occur in your relationship. But in the end, it was inevitable.

It was either for gain or for loss. And how she truly hoped it wasn't the latter.

Taking a deep breath, you rub your thumb against her hand gently, looking directly into her eyes as she does the same. "Before anyone else can do it, happiest birthday Dolores. I truly wish to make this night unforgettable for you- to show you that you're no shadow of anyone and that your light burns just as brightly as everyone else; even Isabela."

Pulling you into a tight hug, Dolores takes a breath. "I don't need all this for you to make me feel that way, you've already done it every day. You always did your best to assure me that I'm just as wonderful and deserving of love. That's why I'm so lucky, that I have you by my side through thick and thin."

You smile at her one last time before pulling her with a gentle tug towards Casita's doors. "Shall we?"

"We shall." She smiles back, and the moment the doors open, flower petals fall from the ceiling like party poppers, pinks and purples looking like snow falling. The music starts playing gently, and everyone greets her at the same time.

She laughs gently, loving the special effects Isa makes with her gift, and the townsfolk being oddly considerate of the noise.

The Madrigals all come to greet her with a hug, Abuela dedicates a short speech to the birthday girl before everyone starts to eat.

Just as people start walking to the table of food, you stand against a wall, gently watching Dolores from across the room as she beams with joy, chatting with several younger women.

And almost as if she could feel your stare, she turns to look back at you, her smile only growing brighter. It almost felt like it was just the two of you in the room until he starts approaching her; Mariano.

The sparks you had felt flying suddenly get redirected, and just as quickly, she starts to look weak in the knees as his attention is placed on her.

"Happy birthday." He states with a charming smile, reserved and polite. Just from his body language, you could tell he wasn't trying to charm her. He was trying to win her favor as a possible future in-law.
