My Only Choice

With both hands, you cup her cheeks, carefully wiping the tears that fall from her eyes. Her big brown orbs were filled with tears that were still threatening to spill, and how you wished you could chase all the pain away in a single swoop.

If it were merely possible, you'd have long absorbed all her pain away and kept it for yourself. Just seeing her happy was enough, enough for you to keep enduring.

Your world be damned as long as hers continued to flourish; a destructive mindset that goes along with your continuous love for her.

"Come on, let me bring you home..." You whisper as you place a gentle kiss on her forehead, doing your best to soothe all the distress and troubles going across her mind.

She merely nods sadly, grasping tightly onto you as you lead the way through narrow streets, hoping to avoid being the talk of the town.

You head straight towards your room the moment you enter the café. And right after a single step through the small place of solace, Dolores pushes herself against you once again, the back of your knees hitting the bed with the said woman lying right on top of you.

"Tío Bruno's vision for me was literally that the man of my dreams would be betrothed to another. It's inescapable." She whispers, whimpering simply because she tries to muffle the sound of herself crying.

It would always echo in her head because of how loud it sounded coming out of her lips, she simply found it displeasing. But she knew you didn't find it as troublesome as she did, always making sure to reassure her to never hold back around you.

"He never said Mariano would get married, Dol. Being betrothed is different from getting married." You state, always looking for holes in her Tío's vision. It's the one thing she never stops bringing up.

And truth be told, your arguments to it have gotten quite repetitive, just like her responses to it. "You honestly can't expect me to ruin their relationship, can you?"

You tsk her repeatedly, mocking her as if she was nowhere near the level of intellectual intelligence you were at.

With a roll of her eyes, you could feel the mood slowly lightening up again. "Maybe fate will do it for you... You just need to wait and see I guess."

And if this conversation was going just like old times, she would simply nod her head and slowly fall asleep with heavy eyelids because of all the crying...

But for the first time, she questions. "And if it doesn't...?"

You look down at her, hope drained from her features and significantly getting tired of doing so.

After a pause, with a thoughtful hum, you whisper. "Then maybe you can find someone else who will treat you the way you deserve..."

You undo the ribbon on her hair with a quick motion, making sure it doesn't get snagged along with it and letting it fall down to her back. With soothing strokes all the way from the top of her head, down to her back, you hum a soft tune.

"And maybe it doesn't need to be a man." You whisper once again, well aware that she could hear it. Surely it would be okay to say that much, right?

With your best friend lying on top of you, you could immediately feel her heartbeat speed up at an alarmingly fast pace against you.

She pulls away almost just as instantly as if she had been burned from your touch, red coating her cheeks and using her hands to cover them while she turns away.

It was beating so fast that it easily overpowered everything else she could have been hearing. Just like a drum repeatedly resounding in her ears, it was something that only Mariano had been able to do to her... until now.

And as if searching, disappointment almost floods her features when she finds your heart pacing just... normally. Until the last second when it finally hits you that she understood what you were trying to indicate.

"I... I mean! I mean, it was just a mere suggestion! Since the vision mentioned a man.... maybe your real soulmate would be a woman... is all." You speak in between pauses, well aware that you were acting like a flustered mess while your cheeks continued to rosen up.

For the first time, Dolores had actually heard your heart pace... And not for any man, or any random person. It was for her, by the gods how it thrilled her, to say the least.

Your heart was beating just as fast as hers, and she wasn't hearing it beat like that for Isabela either, the Madrigal who supposedly almost always instantly won over people's hearts.

For the first time, she felt like she was someone's first choice. "You're my soulmate, obviously..." Dolores whispers, and you barely catch it. "No one could ever come close to how connected and in tune we are with each other."

"Exactly." You murmur, already knowing that she's lightly avoiding what you started in the romance aspect while bringing up the platonic boundary. But what matters is that you at least tried, right?

And it wasn't a fruitless effort, because after all, Dolores had shown a reaction towards you that she only ever really did around Mariano. Perhaps slowly but surely, you'd have a chance.

Playing the right cards, taking time, and hoping for the best... something you'd long given up on now resurfacing, all because of her getting flustered?

You were setting yourself up for disappointment and hurt once again... But you've finally decided that maybe it was time to reveal the side of you that you've long kept hidden from her.

In the first place, you never put walls up around Dolores nor had any secrets. She had the keys to all the doors inside of you, and she'd finally decided to open the very last one.

"Dolores, I hope you know that you deserve to be someone's first choice. You're just that wonderful. And if Mariano ever decides to settle with you... well, I hope it isn't because you were just there, as someone who's long been in love with him."
