later that afternoon, they landed in Hartford. Hunter couldn't care less how Eda managed to pay for flight tickets that fast, though normally he would. now the only thing that concerned him was his mother.
Eda had just gotten off the phone as they waited for a taxi. she looked at the Noceda siblings. Hunter didn't stop mumbling under his breath and Luz played with her fingers, cracking her knuckles and twisting her fingers
"what happened?" Hunter asked. a taxi finally stopped before them and they all got in
"where are we headed ma'am?" the taxi driver asked
"Hartford hospital" she answered
"what happened?" Hunter repeated
"someone bombed the road where your mom was" Eda managed to say, not knowing how
"what?" Luz though hearing this, stayed completely silent, just playing with her fingers like she did whenever she was anxious
"hey driver, hurry up" Eda ordered
they sped to the hospital despite the traffic and rushed out of the car. Eda didn't bother to pay and continued to run despite the driver shouting at her to stop. they ran until the reception where they were asked to quiet down.
"i'm looking for- i'm looking for Camila Noceda" Eda said, out of breath
"and who are you to her?" the receptionist asked, not even bothering to look at the person speaking to her
"her children" Hunter answered before Eda could speak
"Camila Noceda is in the process of an operation; we will give you a notice on changes. you may have a seat" Eda sighed but obliged, leading Hunter and Luz to the waiting area
hours upon hours and still no word. Luz had fallen asleep waiting but Eda could not. and neither could Hunter. he just closed his eyes, trying to hold back tears.
finally someone approached. a doctor. Eda instantly stood up. she didn't know why but maybe this man could give her hope. hope of her best friend being ok. but the look on his face said otherwise
"don't tell me" she said, holding back tears
"i'm sorry. we did everything we could to save her" Eda sat back down. Hunter heard everything. he heard Eda's desperate attempt to ask the doctor to say it was prank. he heard her cry. that was rare. he felt his own heart stop hearing what was said. they just got to Bonesborough a few days ago. they were getting ready to tell her about the various adventures they were going to have on campus
"what's going to happen to the kids?" Eda sniffled
"you're going to have to speak to her lawyer about that" the doctor concluded before he left, giving his condolences once again.
Luz woke up, hearing Eda sniffle and shook Hunter awake, not knowing he already was. as Eda noticed Luz awake, she quickly went to hug her
"what's wrong," she asked. Eda didn't speak. Hunter moved to Luz and they all hugged and cried together
