Chapter 8

It's a festive mood in the Endoscopy Unit!

Dr. Jung has just successfully performed his first ever colonoscopy with Dr. Kim as his assistant and Dr. Lim as their supervisor. Jimin was also present and documented the whole thing. The resident wasn't required to be there as it was already Saturday afternoon and he had the weekend off. He was allowed to leave the hospital premises at 12 noon but decided to stay to witness Dr. Jung perform the procedure. He wouldn't miss it for the world.

The case was that of a 56 year old female complaining of lower abdominal pain. An abdominal CT scan was done prior to check for appendicitis. The result only showed diverticulosis and ruled out any condition that would warrant a surgery. The department decided to perform a colonoscopy as well to rule out other possible colon issues. Since it was a charity case assigned to Hoseok, he was tasked to do the colonoscopy.

It was a pretty standard procedure and Hoseok was able to perform it with ease. They confirmed the presence of diverticulosis and also found several polyps that Hoseok biopsied, as well as mixed hemorrhoids. It was done in record time and everyone happily congratulated the junior fellow for a job well done. It was very exciting and Jimin was proud that he was there for the momentous occasion.

"Good job, Hoseok. After this, you'll be performing colonoscopies left and right with ease. No more shaky hands.", Dr. Lim complimented the fellow, looking at him like a proud father.

"I'm still shaking, Dr. Lim!", Hoseok exclaimed, showing his hands to everyone present. Everyone laughed at seeing how his hands were still slightly trembling.

"You did really well, Dr. Jung. I remember my first colonoscopy. I was so nervous I couldn't insert the scope properly. It kept slipping out. My senior fellow at that time had to do it for me. Thankfully it was smooth sailing after that.", Dr. Kim supplemented. He laughed when he saw the incredulous look Jimin gave him.

"What? I'm not perfect, Dr. Park. I still slip up once in a while. You give me too much credit.", the senior fellow smiled as Jimin blushed. Is he that transparent?

"Anyway, as much as I would like to stay, I still have to go to do my rounds in another hospital. Again, congratulations Hoseok and see you tomorrow.", Dr. Lim interrupted the friendly banter. He went on his way after bidding goodbye to the rest of the staff.

Jimin also prepared to leave but Dr. Jung stopped him.

"Stay, Jimin-ah. The staff ordered some snacks for us. It's probably already in the lounge room now. My treat!", Hoseok cheerfully told the resident, still on a high from his latest achievement. It is customary for a fellow to treat the staff of the endoscopy unit after their first procedure.

"Okay, Dr. Jung! I also have to send you the videos and pictures I took.", Jimin replied with the same enthusiasm. The young doctor is tired after yet another grueling duty but who is he to say no to his favorite fellow after Dr. Kim?

The room is still vibrating with excitement up until they're all full and decided it was time to leave. The man of the hour himself was still feeling giddy as they exited the hospital.

"I still have so much energy. I don't think I'm ready to go home and spend the night alone in my apartment. Anyone up for drinks?" Hoseok turned to Namjoon and Jimin. Namjoon nodded, offering to drive. Jimin felt shy but couldn't bring himself to say no, not wanting to dampen Hoseok's mood so he also said yes.

Namjoon drove them to a nearby restaurant where they ordered nachos and fries. The fellows ordered beers while Jimin had a Mojito. The resident was surprised at how comfortable the scene was. Truth be told, he's still intimidated by Namjoon but here, outside the hospital, it's quite refreshing to see the senior fellow relaxing and having a good time. The group engaged in light conversation, talking about random things such as their favorite food, tv shows, med school subjects, and funny bloopers during their tour of duties.
