So I wrote this around December or something and it was when I was still new to serious writing, this isn't quality at all. It's around 550 words. This was a draft for Arknights Survival's chapter 6. I suggest you move on to read stories marked with (L),(SOL) or (WoT) as they are better quality.

The prologue to Chapter 5 has been lost to time because I deleted the original draft while revamping the entire thing. I am very disappointed with my former self as I can do 2.5k per chapter with ease now.

What are we even fighting for?

I gently opened the door to the warehouse. Scavenge and out, that's what I want.

Walking down the hall of boxes, I went through each box to search for anything I could find useful. Most were papers. One specific newspaper caught my eye.

"The Mass Protests in Ursus"

"The recent non-violent demonstrations advocating for Infected rights by the "Reunion" in Ursus have drawn attention across the entirety of Terra. Ursus has been known for its harsh treatment of the Infected, is this their punishment?"

My eyes wandered over to another newspaper.

"New Terrorist Organization"

"The once peaceful group has resorted to violent, radical methods of protest that meet the requirements to be deemed a terrorist organization. The movement has now been designated as a terrorist organization by all Terran nations."

Huh? Conflicting points?

Turning these two newspapers endlessly to find the date, it was clear to me that the former was written before the latter. What turned the Reunion into the genocidal group it is now?

A voice echoed throughout the hallway.

Raising my sword, my steps were light as a feather, my breathing was kept in control.

"No need to raise that sword. I prove no harm." The voice speaks out to me.

I approach the source, eventually finding a heavily wounded Reunion soldier.

Pointing the tip of the blade towards his heart, I asked a question to settle my doubts. But before I could, he said quite an interesting sentence.

"Have you ever wondered what you've always been fighting for?"

"I'm just a pawn on this giant chessboard. Why would I care?" Lies slipped through the slight gap within my lips.

"Didn't you read those newspapers?" He further pressured me.

I "MMMM"d for a moment, finally giving up.

"Well then, go on with your propaganda." The handle of the sharp sword was lowered.

He let out a burst of vicious laughter, maybe I shouldn't have accepted the offer.

"I saw your confused face while you read those newspapers."

"You knew the Reunion before all the violence being committed by them?"

"Certainly. We were just a group of Infected fighting for our rights. No atrocities were committed." He then let out a puff of air, "For some reason, our leader then lead the group down a more militant path."

"I assume you also know."

"No."

Alright, that's all the information I could get about the Reunion. Waste of time, time to ask about Rhodes island.

"How about Rhodes Island?"

"Well for all I care, they're just a Pharmaceutical corporation offering homes to the Infected and treatment towards them, as well as fighting for their rights."

Yeah, the similarities are showing now. This does make me wonder, why do the infected join the Reunion then?

He looked into my eyes, knew what I thought, and delivered the answer.

"Rhode Island doesn't have a promise, the Reunion does." He coughed for a moment, bringing himself back to the brink of death. "Perhaps I'll leave it at that, the rest for you to discover."

"You're fucking with me." The blade was behind held near his neck again.

The last words of this bastard that was filled with bullshit were "Maybe."

I exited the building now, wondering what he meant.

Explanation

It's been a long time since I touched this chapter, but I remember my original idea being to convey the idea that Reunion soldiers aren't that bad at all and also saying the idea of RI and Reunion is one of the same coins, just with some differences.

If I have to say myself, this is a horrible attempt.

The revamp of Survival still contains this idea, just conveyed through a better way.
