"Hello, my love."
The words slipped off his tongue as if it were natural. As if he had been calling me that for years. I feel like most of these things come naturally to him.
"Hi, sweetheart. How was work?"
As much as I want to say this date was planned just for us to meet each other, that is not the case. Truth be told, we won't be able to really meet each other until we're alone.
This date was a game. Let me ask: how well can you play pretend?
"Oh, it wasn't all that bad today. That patient I told you about who has post-traumatic stress from the war, even he wasn't an issue this morning." He expressed.
"I'm glad to hear that, I hope he's recovering nicely. On a side note, you look very handsome tonight."
"And you are stunning as always."
"Thank you, my love," I smiled. Although we were still playing pretend, I still longed for some of his words to be truthful.
The waitress came to our table.
"Good evening, may I get you two something to drink to get started?"
Before Loid could answer for me, I hastily ordered, "I'll have an Aviation cocktail, please."
I turned to Loid, who looked like he was just about to get the words off the tip of his tongue. "And you, Loid?" I cocked my head to the side, folding my hands together over my lap. "Do you want anything?"
His eyes told a different story than his pensive expression. His focus locked on me as he said, "I'm driving, so I'm alright for tonight," and then finally turned to the waitress before adding in a meek "thank you." His jaw clenched ever so slightly, and his words were deeper, holding the bold flavor of black coffee. As he handed the waitress the menus, he added in an extra thought, "I don't think we'll have time for a full meal today since we have somewhere to be. Do you mind just sending the bill for the cocktail?"
My eyes widened as my gaze darted back to him. What the hell was he thinking?
It doesn't matter what he was thinking. My mission is to go along with it.
"Yeah, I'm terribly sorry about that," I lamented. "We have... things to do... if you get what I mean."
The waitress smiled at the innuendo, getting a false sense of where I was going with this in order to avoid further suspicion. We're simply doing what other young couples in love would do on a romantic Saturday night.
"Of course," she replied smugly as she began to leave our table. "I'll get that for you guys."
After watching her as she disappeared from my sight, I took the liberty of asking, "so what the hell was that about, my dear?"
"Something came up at work," he explained briefly while holding up his cell phone. "It's about one of my patients, and I'd like you to come with me."
What on Earth? "Loid, are you saying I'll be getting my hands dirty? It's a little impolite to make me do that unprecedentedly while I'm wearing heels."
"It'll be quick babe," he reassured emptily. "I'm good at my job, so I don't think it'll take that long. I'll give you more information in the car."
Within minutes, my cocktail arrived along with a stupidly expensive bill. It's a shame that we came to Rutz for nothing more than a drink. At least I can be assured that the cocktail was a good choice.
Loid signed the bill while I took my first sip.
"Mmm," I exclaimed brightly. "Tastes like spring! Want to try it?"
