I wish I could say with full honesty that I enjoy parties.

I host them frequently. It became natural for me to take on the role of a host for a few distinct reasons.

The first reason being that it gets too quiet around here for my liking. Dead parents and a sister thousands of miles away can sometimes get boring. Not many people around here have parents that are willing to throw parties so frequently. So, the noise of people yelling and thundering music seems to satisfy the void my family left behind every once in a while.

Secondly, I became accustomed to throwing them on a whim. It's almost a form of therapy to distract myself from whatever's going on in my life. This time around, I decided to throw one a few days after breaking up with my boyfriend of three months.

Finally, the whole empty, spacious, and renovated apartment thing catalyzes these parties as well. My sister's law firm sends me a biweekly check just for existing. My sister and I didn't live this lavishly back when she was still here, but now that she's gone, it's the least I can get as compensation. That, and also a secure education among students who I wouldn't have dreamed of meeting otherwise.

I attend one of the most prestigious international high schools in the country, if not all of Europe. It is no surprise that graduates each year get accepted into the top ranking universities worldwide, many of them going to the states for a rigorous education. From there, they go on to be the world's next leaders, doctors, and engineers. Ostania's Babylon Academy, as it is called, is simply for the elite.

There are multiple ways to get to the top within the academy. The most obvious path being academics, where the valedictorian, salutatorian, and even first decile receive immense praise and recognition. Scoring a spot there is already extremely impressive to colleges and such.

After that, there's athletics. Those who truly excel physically are the ones who represent Babylon Academy and the nation of Ostania at the Olympics every couple of years. The international recognition you get from that is insanely impressive; with that, admission into any college with recruitment is basically a given.

But, one thing seems to stand out above all. To prove you really are the top of the elite, membership on the student council is the best way to do it. It is not just for those who excel in solely academics, nor athletics, but rather all of the above.

The members of the student council oversee the rest of the student body at the academy. Their decisions can override even staff decisions, as they are the mediators of popular sovereignty. Those who can put Babylon Academy student council on their resume practically have an automatic VIP pass to wherever they wish to go.

And so, I must say that I have a vision.

I don't desire seeking a higher education to obtain some fancy degree. Not when there are more imminent problems in the world that I am more than capable of solving as soon as possible.

Problems, such as winning the war that ripped my family apart.

I'd do anything to achieve that goal. So, when I secured a spot on the council by the end of my junior year, I promised myself not to let the opportunity go to waste and to see my vision through to the very end.

There are not that many people here that really care too much for the war. They're all so economically stable and classist to the point where the war itself barely affects their lives. They don't care about protecting the country—they can take a jet to anywhere else in the world and sleep soundly.

Well, no one seems to care that much except my former physics lab partner.

He's not so much the social type, to be honest. But for some reason, he seems to have some sort of soft spot when it comes to me. It might be because he wants to win this war as much as I do so that he can keep his sister safe.
