"Both of your positions are compromised."
"Huh?" Loid exclaimed, looking between me and Sylvia, aka the Handler. "I get how I can be compromised, but Hecate? She just got here. And she's American."
I must admit, I secretly hoped that I had more time than this. In less than 24 hours, Garden managed to realize I'm in the country. I wonder if WISE knows about Garden's activity. As far as I'm concerned, only a select few people within the State Security Service knew about them.
"I understand that," she spoke nonchalantly. "What we do know is that she's not wanted by the federal government, necessarily. We have yet to determine what organization it is, or what their links are to the feds. All we know is that they're tied somehow."
"So," I chime in, switching the subject slightly. "Do you consider this an urgent threat? Do we have to relocate?"
"We'll play it by ear." She responded. "However, we can permit a meeting with the CIA's handler if you wish to negotiate logistics with her."
We sat on opposite sides of the train car. Any other meeting place posed the risk of being watched or photographed. In the empty car, at least, we know no one can know about what we discuss. Everything that happens on this train, stays on this train.
"Can we do that?" I ask, looking at her directly. Her strawberry blonde hair cascaded over her shoulders like vines on a tree. Her pitch black glasses, however, gave me no insight as to what she was thinking in the moment.
"Gladly." Her monotonous tone almost made me afraid of her. "We'll stay in contact, but we can book a meeting with Sasha by Friday."
"And she's doing this on her own?" Twilight asked. "I shouldn't come with her?"
"I know you're madly in love with me, but that's not necessary," I deadpanned.
"What? No, that's not what I—"
"Twilight." The Handler called. His eyes darted towards her figure with desperation, deep pink imbuing his cheeks. "She will meet with Sasha, one-on-one, by Friday. Perhaps you can take care of the child while she's gone instead of always leaving her to Franky."
His face twisted acridly with offense. I couldn't tell whether it was because he wouldn't be needed at the meeting, or because of his parenting skills. Either way, it's comical how offended he can get at the slightest thing.
"However," she added, causing him to look up at her in anticipation. "We do have an assignment for you tomorrow, if you'd like the debriefing now rather than later."
He nodded, signaling for her to go on.
"You will disguise yourself as a butler on the thirteenth floor of The Royal Hotel. The thirteenth floor is designated for conference meetings, and specifically, the Vice Minister of the Auditing Department is the only person holding a meeting tomorrow evening. Your task is to eavesdrop on room 1307, figure out what he, Brennan, is planning, and report it back to WISE."
He rested his back on the seat, letting out an exhausted exhale through his nose. He wasn't being overworked, was he?
"What time?" He asked, making a mental note of the new side mission. Last time I accompanied him on one, the outcome wasn't the most favorable. Maybe it's better that he takes care of this one on his own.
