War

Blood poured through my fingers

Stains crimson on my scrubs

As your breath slowly lingered

On the verge of the night

We fought till the morning

We tried all that we knew

The machines gave us warning

It blared all the clues

One of our soldiers that bravely fought on

In enemy land so foreign to our own

So many times you should have been gone

Yet you shouldered the dangers, kept moving along

Flatline on a monitor, so stricken so cruel

Lord, let me save this man, there's a family at home

At my feet lies your blood, like water it pooled

Is his wife with some loved ones, or is she alone?

I picked up the phone, my hands trembling slight

My voice a monotone as I tried to console

We fought another battle, we lost this fight

My mind filled with sadness, I understand the hole

His wife wept with anger and unbearable disbelief

As I try to give details and leave out all the gore

A flag and a medal all we can give as reprieve

He was a hero fighting someone else's war.
