Betrayal
By vallwrites

~

Disbelief.
That's how it starts off.
No one wants to believe that their favourite person could possibly betray them,
so we force ourselves to believe that it's all a lie,
even though, deep down,
we know the truth,
we're just not ready to admit that to ourselves.
Denial.
We believe their lies,
not because we actually believe them,
but because we want to believe them.
But it can't last forever.
There comes a point where the pain becomes too much and we must move onto the next stage.
Acceptance.
The most painful stage of it all.
Every memory flashes through our minds.
We remember the most raw moments we spent with them,
thinking back on the things we told them,
the things they told us.
We begin to wonder,
what else was a lie?
The trust we once held for that person
suddenly tarnished,
vanished into thin air,
no longer viable for us to find again.
We search and search and search,
reaching out for it desperately,
trying to pull it back towards us,
because we don't want to lose them.
But without trust,
we must.
Without trust,
there is nothing.
The next stage begins,
almost as heart wrenching as the last one.
The goodbye.
The final moment
where everything is accepted
and both parties know that it's time to move on,
to forgive but not forget,
to let the other go.
It's soul crushing to watch them leave,
to say goodbye for the final time,
to see their hand slip away,
to not fight
even though we so desperately want to fight
because the love we once held for them is still there,
deep down in our hearts.
And we still want them.
We want who they once were...
who we thought they were.
And it's such a shame,
because that person is gone.
They tarnished that person who was dear to our hearts.
Demolished them.
Until there was nothing left.
