"You're certainly smiley today," Naya's mother commented from behind the morning newspaper. "What happened?"

"I met someone I really connected with," she admitted, stuffing two pieces of bread in the toaster.

"See? I told you you'd fit in fine here. But nooo, it was all complain, complain, complain all day, every day, and nothing would ever be right again for all eternity," her mother snapped annoyedly.

"Long night?" Naya set the piece of toast she'd buttered next to her mother's hand before picking up her own.

"You bet. I can't believe how many people get sick in this city! The hospital is so understaffed I'm working ten shifts at once every day!" She took a deep breath, then a bite of toast. "The money is good, the money is good."

"Speaking of money," Naya tried, "I thought maybe we could go clothes shopping this weekend. It'd be a good mother daughter bonding—"

"I'll give you the money. Go with a friend, or this new boy you like."

Naya frowned, then blushed bright pink. "I never said it was a boy."

"You're an open book." She glanced at her watch, then grabbed the toast and started towards the door. "See ya."

"Bye?"

The door slammed shut, leaving Naya alone.
