Charred hearts are those
Where darkness invades the reigning light,
And dark hearts are where
There was never an incandescent flame to start by.
And so in the charred ones
You can find scraps of warm old letters,
Perhaps a diamond ring or a nostalgic trinket
Amidst sweltering coal embers.
But do pity the dark ones,
Who never lit a candle,
To read love's epistles in pouring rains.
Or smelled, the whiter than white, sweet jasmine
In the raven, darker than night, hair of their maiden.
