Jade Hendersons POV

ding!

i walk through the doors of the only convenience store in Hawkins, downtown.

"Jade! i haven't seen you since spring." Joyce Byers says, with a warm smile.

she had been a lot of comfort to me the weeks after my dad died. while other family friends brought casseroles & such, Joyce would sit with me for hours, just letting me cry. something i think i'll always be thankful for.

"has it been that long?" i reply.

she nods. "what are you looking for?" she asks, changing the clearly uncomfortable subject.

"uhm, cigarettes." i say.

she gives me a scolding look.

"for my mom." i say with an awkward, forced laugh.

"yeah, i'm sure. what kind?" she asks.

i point to the box of cigarettes i want, and watch Joyce grab them.

even though i'd never admit it, the only reason i smoke the kind i do is because i like the packaging. stupid, i know.

"$1.57." she tells me, entering the number into the old cash register.

i dig through my bag, pulling out $1 and two quarters, setting them down on the counter.

"hold on, i have 7 cents." i say, vigorously digging through my bag.

finally, i pull out the 7 cents.
a dime and seven pennies.

Joyce puts the money into the cash register, sliding the cigarettes over to me.

"thanks" i smile.

she just nods, and i walk out.

-

i pull back up to the highschool, getting out of my car and roughly shutting the door.

i brush off my jeans, grabbing a cigarette out of the new box.

i place a cigarette onto my lips, pulling out my lighter to light it.

i lean over to look at my car radio, 4:01.

"ugh! dustin, hurry the hell up." i mumble incoherently to myself.

i take one last puff before dropping my cigarette onto the asphalt and stepping on it.

i walk into the school, wandering the halls in search of the d&d room.

after what feels like forever, i finally find it.
as i push open the left side of the double doors, i see a group of nerds cheering.
about what: i have no clue!

"hey teach." Eddie says with a smirk, while walking towards me.

"teach?" i scoff.

he looks down at my shoes, before turning to Dustin.

"oh dude. you are so right!" he says bursting into laughter.

thats when i remember, what dustin must've told him.

"what a charming antidote!" i say, giving dustin a death stare.

"teach." eddie mouths, obviously trying to provoke me.

"shut up Munson!" i say, pushing his shoulder.

"okay, okay." he says laughing.

"Dustin, ready to go?" i say looking at him.

"not yet!" he replies, too busy to look at me.

"come on!" i say annoyed.

"you come on! it's not like you ever have plans." he says in a snarky tone.

"well, maybe i do have plans!" i snap back, referring to Billy & i's date.

"ha! with who?" he laughs.

"none of your business!" i reply, not wanting a lecture from my little brother.

-

after 20ish minutes he's finally ready to leave.

"i'll walk you out." Eddie says, pushing the door open.

"how chivalrous!" i reply.

"i know, right." he says, matching my sarcastic tone.

he walks Dustin & i to my car, and Dustin gets in the passenger seat.

"it was nice seeing you." Eddie says, looking into my eyes.

"yeah. you too." i say, smiling at him.

we say goodbye, and i get into my car shutting the door.

shit. it finally hits me:
tonight i have a date with Billy.
