j. torres + first date

joaquin torres returns to your empty bookshop just two days later. it's the middle of the work day, during the off-season in your little corner of new york.

he has the book tucked under an arm, and in each hand, one hot drink from the café down the block. "hi."

"torres." you switch off the e-reader in your hands, your gaze bouncing between the cups.

"do you like coffee, or hot chocolate?"

your brow creases. "no preference."

then he puts both drinks on the counter, sliding them towards you. jesus christ.

"i read it," he says, flashing the cover at you.

you raise your eyebrows nonchalantly. "really? thought you were here to return it."

joaquin clears his throat, ignoring your teasing. "i'd like to discuss the book with you, as promised."

your lips form a tight line as you cross your legs. "okay, go for it, torres."

"over dinner," he says. his fingers drum on the counter.

"did your friend sam make you rehearse that line?"

that blush blooms on his cheeks again, but joaquin doesn't get flustered like before. "when do you get off work?"

he's persistent. and cute. and clearly very sweet. you're rapidly running out of reasons to play hard-to-get. "five."

"i know a good place. i'll meet you here."

when he grins, you realize that you like his bright smile much more than trying to get him to squirm. "okay."

before he leaves, he confirms: "¿a las cinco?"

you nod, picking up the coffee to hide your smile behind the lid. "bye."

by 4:50, he's back in the store offering to help you close. the attentiveness, the care... it all throws you off.

"thanks for the help." you fold your arms after locking the shop. "and for the drinks." with a big inhale, you start following him down the sidewalk. "and for cleaning the books from earlier." you readjust the purse hanging on your shoulder. "i'll cover dinner."

"i don't mind."

"of course you don't." you roll your eyes, playfully elbowing him. "i insist."
