Jisung envisioned his crush riding in on a horse carriage and him gallantly walking over to meet him. But then his imagination was crushed when he realized that Jeno would be the one to clamp his hand and help him to the ground. Who was he fooling, he would be the guy following behind to retrieve the poop.
❡ He was quite impressed by the festival this year. Because they had a sister school, they had even more notoriety and funds. So much that they were able to install a pond in the back of the school. Over a thousand people were in attendance, students, families of students and locals, Jisung was sure they'd make even more money from the festival. for the first time he actually felt impressed by his school and hoped that a special someone was enjoying himself.
It was 6pm when Jisung checked his beaten up watch. He had now wandered near the pond where the fish catching booth was and watched as they jumped around in the water to avoid being caught. One of his classmates who was leading the booth tried to get him to play but he declined the offer because he hated floppy things. He was about to leave until he felt someone lean on the railing beside him. It was the person he didn't expect to see.
Jaemin pretending not to see Jisung at first made him unsettled, so he waited patiently until he was finally acknowledged, which was after the boy praised the koi fish in the pond which he seemed especially impressed by. With a warm smile he finally looked beside him, "enjoying the festival?"
Jisung felt like his tongue was caught and just like in his dreams, he had no dialogue. So he only nodded yes. "How about you", he finally replied after moments of silence. He tried his best to sound confident. "I see you like the pond?"
Jaemin nodded slowly, "I've never seen anything like it before."
Although it was warm for a fall evening, it was still a bit chilly and Jisung quickly noticed that his crush was underdressed for the occasion. He was like that, kind of a free spirit. He wore only a padded vest along with a long sleeve undershirt. The brown vest looked expensive-the material was similar to a soft corduroy and while his tennis shoes were basic, they also looked more supportive than the tennis shoes he would probably wear. Something about the fabric of things separated the wealthy from the not so wealthy, Jisung always said. Jaemin may have noticed that he was scoping him out, but he allowed him to do so.
He eventually parted ways from the railing and was now face to face. He liked to believe Jaemin's eyes were communicating something more. Maybe it was just the ambience of the night, but it invited him to have these kinds of delusions. "Ya know. I don't see you a lot in school.''
Jisung wondered why he'd want to see a simple tutoree. "maybe because we're in different grade levels?"
"I suppose that's true." Jaemin had a hint of disappointment in his voice. Even if that were true, it wouldn't explain why he saw Jisung's friends often.
"I guess I'm a bit of a loner..." Jisung admitted, almost predicting the reasoning behind the boy's expression. He was the closeted introvert who just happened to have a popular friend group. He couldn't live up to them even if he tried.
Nearby, a couple had won a large prize and Jaemin seemed cheered on by that spectacle. That was the first time he seemed to look at the booth at all. He asked if Jisung had won any prizes today and he admitted that he hadn't played a single game. Like the classmate, Jaemin tried to nudge him to have a little fun but Jisung remained a bore.
"you know you can speak with me comfortably." -The statement was said out of the blue and even jaemin laughed at his own comment. "I just mean...we're close in age. You don't have to be so formal."
But, Jisung didn't want to be informal with his crush because he respected him. "B-but you're my tutor..."
"Even so, we're still friends," Jaemin shrugged.
Jisung cleared his throat, "friends?"
"Sure. My friends are friends with your friends. wouldn't that make us friends?"
By now, Jisung couldn't hide the smile forming on his face nor did he try to.
He repeated the word 'friends' in his head.. causing his smile to grow more and more. friends... na jaemin is my friend. No way. "I don't know.." he said quietly to himself.
Jaemin pretended to walk away. "Okay well, I understand." But he was stopped by a hand on his arm. Jisung quickly threw them back to his side and apologized.
"It's okay..." Jaemin chuckled. He checked his arm out a little, "i just have a small bruise but nothing-
"Jeongmallyo-" Jisung again had to stop himself before getting too close. It was clear Jaemin was teasing him. "Jaemin..." he said in a baby voice. He immediately felt self conscious for saying his name out loud.
"I doubt you could ever hurt me," jaemin said in a soft voice." you're as gentle as a feather."
Jisung was about to say something daring but before he could a familiar voice called out from the distance. Maybe it was for the greater good, if he confessed there at that moment he would have dropped out of school by the next morning.
"Hey Gangnam prince! I hope you're not skipping out on our rematch."
Haechan approached with such a confident walk it was clear he was in gamer mode. Jisung laughed just thinking about how the manic probably searched all over the campus to find Jaemin and continue their little arcade battle. Jaemin offered a friendly smile to ease the competitive peer. "Okay one last match. If you lose again...."
"Ahhh play now, talk later. Haechan said, beginning to push him from the backside.
The two battled in the arcade once more and of course Haechan lost. "I let you win that one," he lied.
Jaemin was a good match for Hae's trash talk. "Ha! That's what you said last time."
After a while, he finally forfeited and they all found a booth to eat a little outside of the premises. From their view they could see the full scope of the carnival and the voices inside were now faded. They were now talking about sports and Haechan pretended he couldn't join basketball because of a knee injury. While that was true, he wasn't that good at it. Jisung bit his tongue so that he could flex on the unknowing victim.
"By the way, when is your next game?" He asked Jaemin.
"Hmmm. Next week. we have one home and one away."
Jisung enjoyed being around the two but couldn't help but feel nervous. He felt the devious redhead could reveal his secret at any moment. He even sat a little further from them on the bank hoping that Haechan wouldn't involve him too much in the conversation and say something regrettable.
"Hey Jisung, come over here for a sec-"
All he heard were those words and he perked up, "Oh!" Jisung said, pretending to see something in the distance, " I have to go over uh, there really quick."
Haechan tried to follow his hands, but they weren't pointing to any specific place. This little act caused Jaemin to burst out laughing. Even more so when Haechan complained about how often he gets ditched by him.
"Anyways," Haechan continued," We will be there next time to cheer you on!"
