There was this young girl with green eyes
Who had soft blond hair
In braided pigtails.
By the age of seven,
She had grown to watch her older sister
Stand in front of the mirror.
She would pinch her stomach,
And make a face that didn't look so appreciated.
Together they wouldn't eat breakfast.
By the age of nine,
She had watched her older brother
Make fun of this girl who was wearing glasses.
As she was just reading on the bus behind him.
She went on to go home to tuck all her books in the attic
By the age of twelve,
She had watched all the older girls at school
Straight their hair and wear short shorts.
They would put makeup on in the bathroom
And go on lecturing how boys only liked you
If you looked perfect.
The next day she arrived at school with red lips,
Short shorts, and no braided pigtails.
By the age of fourteen,
She had watched as her father hit her mother,
Her mother cried when she saw her standing in the doorway.
She told me that daddy didn't mean it.
The following year, she had went on
Telling herself that her boyfriend didn't mean it.
By the age of sixteen,
She found herself being paper thin and empty inside.
With her straight blond hair and red lips and lifeless green eyes,
She stares at her reflection
And thinks to herself,
That she is normal.
