AN:// Hey friends! I'm reposting one of my stories that was lost when my last one shots book was deleted. This story is based in a made up rural area around the civil rights movement or before, hope you enjoy!

———

"You've really done it now Tessa."
I tug my 14 year old sister by her ear as we pace, and kick up dust walking down the dirt roads of Jenepsi, Kansas.

"Ow Dolly! Big ouch! Big ouch!" Tessa whimpers making the best of her words despite her disability.

But disabled or not, Mother and I are trying to raise Tessa into a fine young woman the best way that we can.. we can't pity her every time and then expect her to grow up strong.

I let go of Tessa's ear and stop us both dead in our tracks.

"Now you listen here." My lips curl in anger, with a hand on my hip, and a finger pointed directly in her face..
I let Tessa have it..
"Don't play victim Tessy.. you know how much trouble you're in. And when Mama finds out the verdict of today, you're especially done for!"

Tessa begins to cry.
"Please don't tell Mama Dolly! Please!"

"You hush up now!"
I wipe her tears away.
"Now you know I have to tell her..
You just have to stop this! Don't let anything like this happen again!"

I notice the dust around us begin to rise higher, the rocks and pebbles that sit on the road bounce and vibrate as a vehicle approaches us.

Oh no.. we have to get home faster.

Before I'm able to take another step.
Roy Carter jr. and his boys pull up on us in his red pick up truck.

Lord knows that I wish they'd keep on driving..

"Dolly!" Roy shouts drunkenly hanging out of the window of the old Chevy.

He chugs a beer down and throws the brown glass bottle to our feet, making Tessa and I frightfully jump back a bit.

A shard leaps from the ground and cuts me on the side of my ankle.. I don't make a fuss even though the pain stings terribly..

I just don't want these men to find another reason to bother us some more.

"Well don't you two look lovely!" Roy continues.
"Sunday's best? What's the occasion?"
