It's starting

Come on, Rose

You know her

You know her...

Somehow the girl's fiery red hair seemed so familiar, I just couldn't quite recall who she was.

I looked at her with narrowed eyes, trying so hard to remember something, anything.

"Axel, could I talk to you for a second" I say

The girl doesn't leave.

"In private, please?" I add

He follows me to the bathroom that connected to the room.

I immediately shut the door the second he stepped in.

"Who is that girl?" I question honestly

He stares at me blankly.

"So? Are you gonna tell me?" I ask

"You're not serious" he says, his eyes widened

"Is she your friend?" I ask

"No Rose, she's your friend"

"What? No...no what are you talking about? This isn't the time to joke, just tell me who she is?" I say again

"Am I joking? Are you joking?"

"Well that's the real question isn't it" I roll my eyes "Just get to the point, who is Maya?"

"Rose...she's your best friend" he says seriously

"What? No, I think I remember who my friends are" I scoff

"That's exactly my point, she's your friend and you don't remember her." He pauses "It's starting, and it's going fast. We need to kill our father before you start forgetting more."

"Oh my god" I breathe out

"You do know who I am, don't you?" He asks

"Yeah I know who you are" i say in a 'duh' tone

He doesn't say anything, as if waiting for me to add something

"You're Axel Anderson, my brother" I say finally

"Ok, ok....just making sure" he says "We need to tell the others, now that you're....forgetting things quicker. I mean- you don't remember Maya"

"Huh? What? Of course I remember Maya. Are you okay?" I ask

"Wha- I...what?" He says, utterly confused

Why he was confused, I don't know

"You just said you didn't know who she was"

"Are you okay, Axel? Are you sick?"

"Oh shut the hell up. You-you I-"

"Did I say I didn't remember her?" I ask

"Yes, yes you did. Listen if this is some joke I-" he starts

"I don't remember saying that" I cut him off "Of course I remember Maya"

"Ok now, something is seriously wrong. You're losing and gaining fragments of your memory." He says

"So you're saying there's some kind of malfunction in my brain"

"That's exactly what I'm saying" he says

"Ok we can continue this later, Maya is probably confused to why we're shutting her out like this" I try to open the door, but I only get as far as touching the handle before Axel yanks my hand away

"We need to talk now. This is getting serious, and we need to tell someone or-"

I cut him off "I know what it means, but we don't need to add more stress on the others more than they are already"

"Fine, but if you forget one more person. I'm telling them, I don't care if we've killed our father or not. If you don't tell them I will. I'm not going to let you destroy yourself Rose. Not after what happened to Greyson. I can't lose you too" he says before swinging the door open, but he pauses just before leaving.

He turns around "Does it hurt?" He asks. A simple question, or so it should be.

I don't say anything, but I force myself to nod.

He takes a final look at me, something different in his eyes. "If I could take all the pain from your heart and put it in mine. I would." He says and this time he leaves.

I couldn't help but feel bad.

"Maya, hey" I say, seeing her standing outside the door

"Rose, are you okay? I heard you screaming" she says, a worried look on her face

"Yeah yeah, it was just a nightmare" I reassure her

"They're starting again" she says

"Yeah, they're getting bad" I say truthfully

"I'm sorry, about everything. You didn't deserve that." she says

"Don't apologise it's not like it's your fault they're dead" I say almost choking on the word 'dead'

"I know, but-" she stops herself mid sentence "You should eat something"

"I don't really feel like eating, I need to find Ashton and Claire. Have you seen them?" I ask

"Last time I saw them, they were leaving your room when you were asleep. They went to look for a body and count the casualties. I'm not sure where they are now"

"Oh" is all I managed to say

"Aren't you gonna ask where you are now?" She questions

Oh yeah, I forgot about that

That slipped my mind.

"Oh yeah, where are we?" I finally ask

"We're at the second school, merging all the surviving people into one school seemed like the smartest idea. For the time being." she says

"I guess"

"So, will you come down for dinner?" she asks

"Dinner?"

"Yeah, you were out for a while. Can't say I blame you" she says with a sad smile

"Ok let's go" I give in

The hall was simple decorated, not like our school that had flawless detail and designs covering the walls and a giant chandelier right in the centre.

Nonetheless, the school was beautiful. It was massive, I swear Maya and I must have went down at least twenty flights of stairs.

There were so many people it was hard to navigate. Maya grabs my arm gently and pulls me with her.

"The buffet here is so good. Breakfast was omg- well it was amazing"

"Breakfast? I thought now was breakfast" I say, confused.

Great now I'm losing track of time too.

She stops at that and turns round to face me.

And there's something in her eyes, something different. Something that wasn't there before.

Not just that she looked just as tired as I bet I looked right now, but what was in the eyes.

"Are you-?" she cuts me off

"Technically it's lunch now, you woke up late" she reassures

"You're going to love it"

And before I get another chance to say anything, she pulls me away towards the scent of the food.
