At the beginning of April, Yoshiko Kamisato was working for the India Company.
"Anyone who stands out can be used even by parents. So, a daughter would be even better," said Aiko, her adoptive mother, while laughing.
As for Yoshiko, the intent behind Aiko's eyes at such times bothered her. That was exactly the way she looked at herself, as if she was saying that her love interest is in a bad way and it is a good thing. Maybe she went a bit overboard, Yoshiko thought to herself.
As for Yoshiko, she would like to be her adoptive father, Shoichi, if they did not have an adoptive relationship. However, Shoichi seemed to be firm on this point, and showed no signs of being attracted to her. And as for herself, since they were officially an adopted parent and child, she had given up on the idea of getting married to Shoichi. Yoshiko was born and raised in Ayutthaya in the Kingdom of Siam, and Thai is her native langue. She grew up listening to conversations between overseas Chinese and Japanese who frequented Shang Liwu, so although she cannot write, she was able to speak the everyday Chinese language that overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia mainly use. Yoshiko had no particular objection to this.
On her first day of work, Yoshiko panicked.
"Huh? I'm going to be away from Japan for a while!?"
"Yes, I'm going to the Ottoman Empire to negotiate, but I don't have enough interpreters."
"What language do the Ottomans speak?"
"Turkish and Arabic."
"I don't speak Turkish or Arabic."
"In Aceh and Malacca, there are interpreters who speak Turkish and Arabic, and they translate into Chinese. Then you will translate it into Japanese."
"That's absurd."
"Even so, we are short on staff. Do your best."
That was what her immediate supervisor told her out of the blue.
Yoshiko was so indignant that she ran into her adoptive father Shoichi's office to protest, but he told her that she had not heard that much from the beginning.
"I knew that if I had told you that much from the beginning, you would have refused, so I decided to explain it to you later. I have already talked to the government about this, and your position has already been made a temporary commission at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs."
