Third Person POV
September 3rd, 1940 // September 6th, 2016
Sawyer sobbed in the arms of the boy she fell in love with, Enoch holding her promising himself to always help her. Both of the teens grieved the loss of a woman they both loved so much. The entire house felt the pain as they had lost a friend, but focused on the pair. While Enoch was hurting, he hid it from Sawyer, not wanting to add onto her pain with his own.
Sawyer collapsed in his arms and he moved to slide his arms under her. He stood with the grief stricken girl in his arms and made his way to his room, ignoring each person as he passed. Everyone was grieving as well, but were worried for the pair that were the closest to Amelia.
As Enoch entered his private space he set Sawyer down on his bed, removing her shoes and pulling a blanket over her before placing himself down. He pulled her towards his body and cupped her face lightly as salty tears continued to stream down her pale cheeks.
“I know baby, I know,” he spoke in a low and soft tone, understanding the pain she was feeling. She moved to be closer to his chest, silently begging the pain to go away. He held her tighter and softly wiped the tears away, the mixed pain of the woman he used to love dying and the woman he had fallen even harder for grieving in his arms. Her soft sobs slowly fell into uneven breath as the exhaustion caught up to her and she fell into dreamless sleep.
She hadn’t had a dream since the night she received the letter, and she also had refrained from telling Enoch what her grandmother had told her. She couldn’t tell if it was because she didn’t know if it was real or if it was because she hadn’t found a moment she wasn’t overcome with emotion.

Jacob entered the house, immediately sensing the unease and pain. Miss Peregrine had reached out to him, informing him of the death that struck the family. He set out right there and then for the home, understanding Sawyer’s pain and wanting to be there for extra help around the house. He knew everyone loved Amelia, and although he never knew her personally, he knew Sawyer. And he cared for the girl, after all they held similar situations. When he arrived he helped with chores and even convinced a pale Sawyer to eat along with the help of her boyfriend.
Enoch and Jake shared a look of an unspoken thanks.
Later on in the day, Sawyer sat by herself under the large oak tree she adored. She needed fresh air and to be alone. Ever since the letter she’d never been alone in a room, even Emma sat in the bathroom with her while she showered. She didn’t mind though but it became suffocating. So she asked for a little bit of alone time and that’s what she got.
Eventually Jake walked up to her and she greeted him with a soft and sad smile. He gestured to the spot next to her before speaking; “Mind if I sit?”
“Nah, go ahead.” He placed his lanky figure next to the girl, leaning backwards against the bark. The silence was peaceful as a cool breeze drifted by, taking away from the September heat.
“Does the pain ever go away?” Sawyer broke the silence and turned her head to look at her fellow American. He shifted his gaze to peer back at her. He took in a deep breath trying to figure out an answer.
“To be honest, I don’t know. But it does get easier. It will take time but it doesn’t always hurt. Missing them, that’ll always be there, but we have them in our hearts. Forever,” she took in his words, letting them soak deep in the fabrication of her being. “I’m sorry you lost her though, she seemed like a great person.” He offered a smile.
She returned it, “Yeah, I wish you could’ve met her. She never stopped talking about your grandfather. They must’ve been good friends.” The pair nodded, falling back into silence again. A bond had grown between the teens who understood each other in a way no one else here could.
Enoch and Emma stood by the window admiring the two under the tree, feeling happy they found friendship with each other.
“I’m glad Jake came, Sawyer seems to be doing a bit better with his presence around,” Enoch said in his accent he grew to love because of the girl he had his honey eyes focused on. Emma broke her gaze and eyed the man next to her. Shocked at his words, Enoch didn’t seem fond of Jake at first, but this seemed to turn his attitude around. She also knew Sawyer’s influence on him was good, anyone with eyes could see that the hard shell on the boy was cracking and crumbling. She smiled and agreed with him, before patting him and walking out to her new boyfriend.
When Sawyer saw Emma headed her way she glanced at the house, only to find Enoch staring right back at her. She smiled softly, a real smile, one she hadn’t shown in days. She pulled herself off the grass, passing Emma with a kind greeting and quickly moved inside. She suddenly felt herself craving Enoch’s proximity and comfort.
He met her at the door, noticing her getting up in a rushed manner. Her face was slightly flushed when they stopped just mere inches from one another. She quickly moved to hug him. Tight. He was fully prepared for the tears to sprout from her hazel eyes, but instead she spoke.
“Thank you. I know you’ve been having a hard time with this too, but I appreciate you caring for me.” He pulled away just enough to see her face while still having a tight hold on her.
“Of course my love, I would do anything for you,” and for the second time that day she smiled a real smile.
_______________________________________Sawyer’s POV
September 3rd, 1940 // October 3rd, 2016
October. My favorite month, but I couldn’t enjoy it. Not only was it the beginning of fall, but it’s my birthday month, which I wasn’t telling anyone.
I currently stood in the sand of the beach that grew sentimental value to me. The waves crashed against the sandy shore and rocky cliffs. The white foam pulling sand back and seagulls sounded from above. The warm sand was comforting as I watched the scenery around me.
It had been a month now since my grandma passed, and it still hurt a lot, but I knew she wasn’t fully gone. I could feel her connection in the water. Although my abilities had weakened due to the pain, I still held the same connection.
I pushed myself towards the water, finding it calling to me. I felt the foam against my toes and the cold sting my ankles. I walked, not caring if my clothes got wet, until I was waist deep in water. I felt at ease, and the world seemed to slow and quiet around me.
I closed my eyes as the breeze blew across my face. Overwhelming calmness surrounded my body and I focused on my grandma. All I wanted was to see her sparkling eyes again. Just one last time.
Suddenly I felt tingles go up the right half of my body like her spirit was here with me, saying she missed me too. I smiled as a tear streaked down my cheek. A sad chuckle escaped my throat as I thought of her. I focused more on the current underneath the waves and the feeling of the coarse sand below my feet.
I stood in that spot for what felt like hours, letting the space around me swallow me whole. I took in a deep breath, letting the cooled air fill my chest, a comforting feeling. I swished my hands around in the icy water, a relaxing feeling in my hands and wrists. I could sense the scars there and how the water gracefully brushed against them. I enjoyed how the waves calmly pushed against my waist, and how the falling sun warmed my freckled face. Taking another deep breath, the smell of salt filling my nose, I pushed myself under the waves before popping back up.
The breeze cooled my skin down as I wiped the water from my face. When I opened my eyes the sunset filled my pupils and I sighed, knowing my grandma would have loved this.
A warm hand placed itself on my back and I jumped at the contact. I quickly turned to find Enoch to my right, fully dressed like me in the water. He smiled at me with an unreadable expression before pulling me into a hug. I wrapped my arms around his torso with my head on his chest before pulling away slightly.
The sun made his honey eyes glow beautifully and the wind blew his curls in such a way that one could only find serendipity in them. I raised my salty wet hand to cup his jaw, dripping water onto him, but he leaned into my palm anyway. I had definitely changed this boy in the best way possible. His gaze never left my face with adoration and love filling the rippling irises he was blessed with. The world seemed to glow around him
