CHAPTER SIX. narrative and imessage
june 4, 2022: iowa city, iowa
"How long have you left her on delivered?" Florence asks me, running her fingers through Bowie's fur as she sits on the couch with him. I'm sitting on the floor by my coffee table. Leah Reynolds sits next to Florence on the couch.
Leah has done the cover art for all of my singles and EPs that have been released, doing it for the album coming out too. I've known her for a bit. Her dad, Ryan Reynolds, is an actor, my dad is a director and producer, so Leah and I met at an awards show we attended with our families and we were seated close to each other. She's two years younger than me, going to be a sophomore in the next school year. We're quite close, she's like the little sister I never had.
I let out a sigh, "Two days," I tell my friends, covering my face with my hands.
"You hate leaving people on delivered," Leah says.
I nod quickly, wrapping my arms around my knees, "I know!"
Kate texted me (from a new number) two days ago and I haven't answered. It's actually killed me not to open the actual message thread. I know I'm being a little immature about it, but considering she didn't answer any of my texts for five months (and left me in the dark for years), I think this is deserved.
"Did you ever... I dunno, have romantic feelings for her?" Leah asks. Bowie climbs into her lap, receiving a look of mock betrayal from Florence, "You're acting like how someone would over an ex, just thought I'd ask."
I shake my head, "No, why does everyone think that?" I say. Florence has asked the same question before, so have my parents and brothers. I really don't get it.
Luckily, Florence changes the subject, "How long are you planning on leaving her on delivered?" she questions and I hear a little hint of disapproval in her voice.
I look up at her, hugging my knees, "I don't know," I say, biting my bottom lip as I grab my phone. I open my messages, staring at the contact I don't yet have saved in my phone, "I'm just gonna text her back."
