"We are products of the past, but we don't have to be prisoners of it." - Rick Warren

PHOENIX
"Skrael...?" I asked.
We sat on the edge of a rock face, staring out at the night sky. Constellations spread across beautifully.
"Yes, Phoenix?" He responded. His raspy voice brought a smile to my face. He'd been quiet for most of the day, and I had wondered why.
"What are we?" I asked. 'That's a dumb question,' I thought.
"That's not dumb," Skrael said, having read my thoughts.
"It's not? Well, I thought it was."
"Of course it's not! I, myself, wonder about that every day."
"And do you know? Since, well," I blushed, "You're the smartest person here, no offense to the others."
Skrael smiled. "I understand, and I trust you, too. To answer your question, I..." his voice trailed off, "I'm not sure."
"I'm scared."
"Of what?"
"The future."
"Phoenix, there's nothing to be afraid of."
"No, Skrael, this is a different kind of fear. I'm nervous."
"Nervous?"
"I don't know what's going to happen! You and Bellroc can only see the past. Nari and I can only control the present. What's to happen in the future? How long will that be? How will that be?"
Skrael smiled and put a cold hand on my cheek. "Little deer, with every second that passes, that is the future. The future is an ambiguous term." He laughed a little. "You have much to learn."
