"Friends are the family you choose." - Jess C. Scott
PRESENT DAY
TERRY

"I'm starting to mildly tolerate you, Terry," Lucifer says one day unexpectedly..

We're in herbology class. Lucifer barely says and does much besides a simple head nod and a 'yes' or a 'nein'. I do a lot of the talking, and I respect his speaking boundaries. I never sit with him at lunch or during recess, and I don't try to force him to have a conversation with him. We're basically at a point where we both understand each other mutually. Terri and Amaya keep telling me to keep my distance, but I've spent enough time with Lucifer to know that he's not dangerous. He's just cold and introverted.

"Oh....thank you," I say, digging into the bed of dirt in front of us. "That's the first compliment you've given me besides, 'You're hair smells like 'spring waterfall',' and , 'That wasn't a stupid decision.'"

Lucifer laughs a little. "Yeah, well, I'm not used to giving compliments to most people."

"What up, losers?"

Celeste from the week before sits at our table. She's dressed in a long-sleeves crop top, skort and has a British accent. The two of us look at each other awkwardly while watching her chew a wad of gum. She gives us an annoyed stare.

"What are you doing here, Celeste?"

"Mr. Huxley said I need to get to know more people, so he sent me to sit with you two."

"You've got to be kidding me," Lucifer mumbles.

"Lookie here, it's the dark one."

"Hello, princess."

"Do you know each other?"

Celeste explains, "3rd grade. We've been stuck with each other ever since."

"I knew I should've transferred schools," Lucifer adds.

"Besides, I chose to sit with you guys. See? I'm not all bad. I've seen how close you two have been so far. It makes me curious. What kind of gay stuff have you got going on?"

"UGH!" I groan.

"What the h*ll, Celeste?!"

"We're just..." I look at Lucifer, not wanting to say friends. "...acquaintances."

He nods.

"Acquaintances? You've been inseparable for a week. It looks suspicious. My girls Gia and Jessica think you're up to something."

I bring my hand to my neck, feeling my virus mark sting again.

"What the heck is that?" Celeste asks, pulling my hand away. "Holy crap...where'd that come from?"

"Nowhere!"

"Looks like a cult symbol."

"It's a virus mark, stupid," Lucifer corrects.

"Makes sense, all viruses are from Pentagram City."

"What's Pentagram City?" I wonder.

"That's awfully stereotypical," Lucifer snaps.

"Of course you would defend against a virus. Wouldn't be surprised if you were one of them."

Lucifer begins to say b*tch, but Mr. Huxley walked up to us to see how we were doing with our new herbology partner.

"How's everything going?" He asks.

"Great," I say.

"I trust Celeste is a pleasant person to work with."

"You have no idea," Lucifer hisses, turning to her.

"Good." Mr. Huxley walks away, and Lucifer gives Celeste another death glare.

"Kill me," she says. "I dare you."

"I would, but he'll call the cops," Lucifer says, pointing at me. My face goes pale. I wanted nothing to do with this argument.

"What about you? What's your name?" Celeste asks.

"Terry."

"I think I've seen your brother in Charms. Well, Terry, what's a glacier like you doing with a dark one like him?"

"He's helping me."

"Not technically," Lucifer complains.

"With what?"

"School work."

"School work?"

"Yes."

"Sure. You know, I bet it has something to do with that cult marking on your neck."

"Virus mark," I rephrase.

"Whatever. Same difference."

"It's actually not-"

"-I want to help, too."

"Really?" I say in disbelief.

"Really?" Lucifer says, raising an eyebrow.

"Really. Something tells me this school year is going to be rather boring. This is my chance to make it a tad more interesting."
