We both walked into the restaurant. It was a bit crowded.
"Looks like the cooks are working hard to attract this many customers," Nonso remarked as we headed toward the kitchen.
"I did choose the best people," I replied with a hint of pride.
"Osas?"
I stopped in my tracks at the sound of my name. Turning to the voice, I saw a familiar face.
How thrilling. 😒
So it must have been Seyi in the car.
"Hey... Zena," I said, forcing a smile.
"Zina. It's Zina," she corrected, still smiling.
"Oh... sorry." I turned to Nonso, who was patiently waiting for me. "I'll meet you inside."
He nodded and continued toward the kitchen.
I sat opposite her.
"I thought I'd find you here," Zina said.
"Yeah..."
"So, uhm... it feels a bit awkward saying this, but you promised to be the chef for my wedding. I just wanted to ask if you'd also be willing to be the wedding planner."
Right. I had told her that just to keep her in a good mood—I never actually intended to be the chef.
"Depends on my schedule. Have you set a date?"
She hesitated. "Yes... August this year."
I felt my heart sink a little at that. Weird.
"That's four months from now," I noted.
"Yes... but—"
Always a but.
"—but I was hoping to have a free sample of your food. I found out that you're not the one who actually cooks here."
"Uhm... sure. When the wedding gets a bit closer."
"Thanks." She flashed a sincere smile.
"Anything for my customers."
She stood up. "I'll be going now. My fiancé wasn't in a good mood this morning."
I didn't respond to that.
"I'm sure you must have missed him—he left a few minutes before you walked in," she added.
I smiled. "Probably." Not.
I stood as well. "It was nice having you here, Zina."
As she walked toward the exit, I headed for the kitchen.
