Chapter 14

God my lip hurt. I kept touching it, even though I knew it wouldn’t make it better. I was in deep trouble with the school, my parents, and Tony. Tony was the scariest out of all of them.

I knew the moment I pushed him, I shouldn’t have. But he couldn’t get it through his think skull that she was mine. That he just embarrassed me and her in front of 30 kids, who were going to go and tell everyone else. So, I just lost it.

I looked up at the clock in the Main Office of our school. 3:05. After Mr. Adams broke up our fight, he had Tony go down to here. Probably because he looked like he was going to kill me, even though I started it. Then Jules left, all shook up. I felt bad for what I did, by just looking at her face. I should’ve wanted to take it back, but someone needed to show Tony that he can’t always have his way.

I sat with Mr. Adams until 3, which was when he stopped getting paid to watch me. He told me he had to hold me there until for a while to let Tony and I cool off a bit before meeting with each other. He didn’t bring up the fight other than that. We just talked about class and authors.

And now I was sitting here, no sign of Tony. Kids were passing by in the hall, seeing me sit in there. I felt like a criminal. Not every day Maywood High school had a fight. They all seemed to stare; I knew that the gossip had spread to everyone and anyone who would listen in an hour. Crazy how fast news travels.

There was no sign of Tony in the cramped office. He was probably still with the Principal talking about it. I was just about to ask the gum-chewing receptionist when I was allowed in, when Principal Jamison’s door opened and I heard his bored voice call me to come in.

I’ve never been in his office before. I was nervous, but I held my composure. Surely Tony told him everything, probably the full truth as he had done nothing but self-defense.

Jamison was sitting behind a wooden desk, with doctorates and pictures hung on the wall behind him. The color scheme and way everything was decorated reminded me of the study in the game “Clue”.

“Sit down, Mr. Dimozio.” He greeted me. I look over to see Tony sitting in the other seat, looking bored and comfortable. His head rested on his hand, and his legs were spread across the floor. He looked up at me, which was when I really saw how strong my punch was.

"So Jack," the principal called for my attention. I looked over to him, barely fazed anymore. "Tony told me what happened. And even though I don’t look like it," he then proceeded to use his hands to show his outfit, which waqs a grey suit matched with a plum colored tie and a white collared shirt. The clothing didn’t hide his middle-aged belly, but the tie fit him nicely. "I was in a fight before over a girl." I must’ve looked surprised because then he murmured that he wasn’t that old.

"I know that you two have never been in here before. Actually, I thought you were new students." he now looked between Tony and I. "So I’m letting you off with a warning. I will not tolerate fighting in this school" he crossed his arms looking pleased with himself. "I also had Tracy-"

"Yes sir?" the new secretary was at the door like a snap of the fingers.  She was tiny, and thin, fresh out of college I’m guessing.

"What did we say about that Trace?" he sighed looking up at her. She nodded her head with a quiet sorry and ran out the door.

"Anyways," he continued. "I had Tracy call this girl down-this uh... Julie Lavender- but she seemed to be missing. I’m guessing she skip-"

"Mr. Jamison, don’t have Jules get in trouble for this. She didn’t do anything." Tony pleaded with the man. "She was probably embarrassed of what happened. It was my fault if anything. I didn’t tell her I was going to tell."

“That’s no reason to skip school, Mr. Voglio,” Tony just looked at him, and then looked down with a guilty look on his face. As if he made her leave.

And just like that, Jamison smiled, sighed and said he would forget it as long as she didn’t make it a habit of herself. "I trust that one of you will relay the message." he joked to himself, looking between us.

"I’ll do it, since I am her boyfriend." I looked over at Tony who was looking at the wall.

"Right then," Jamison looked unsure now. "Well, you two are free to go. No more funny business."

We both nodded at him and left.

It was silent as we made our way to our lockers, other then the bangs coming from the upstairs hallway where the janitors were cleaning and moving the desks around. I wanted to say something, but wasn’t sure what.

“At least we didn’t get in trouble,” I said to him. He looked over at me, his bruises getting bigger.

"Were you telling the truth in there? That you really didn't tell Jules?" I asked him. I know Jules told me, but I needed to know for myself.

"No, she would’ve told me not to do it" he smirked to himself, and then stopped when he noticed I was glaring. His face got serious then.

"Listen man, I didn’t mean to start anything. I don't want to fight you, especially if Jules keeps you around," he murmured through his gritted teeth. "And I especially don't want to fight with Jules. But I guess that’s inevitable now..."

"Yeah she’s pissed." I nodded in agreement.

I then heard him whisper something. Maybe I’ll let her go now, I’ll show you, you cow... I’ll get her somehow! That’s it. But by the time I realized that’s what he said, he was gone.

Hmmf. We’ll see about that.
