The demon elegantly puts his index finger to his chin and looks up. After a while of symbolizing his thinking process he looks back down to you.
His eyes smolder in a way that promises misfortune. When he speaks he sounds as cocky as a teenager.
"Either way I'll win. 'Cause if you fail to kill Akaza I'll feast on you."
He pauses.
"What a wonderful view it would be though to see him die by the hands of vermin."You wonder at what point demons get this disgusting character.
Is it the transformation? Or something later on? The neverending period of time they live or the fact that they can't dwell under the sun?The rainbow eyes pierce you as if they saw your thoughts.
Still you can't move a finger. The demon claps and props his hands onto his knees.
"Aight, we'll make a contract. Kill Akaza by the end of the year and you'll live. If he gets killed before by someone else or he doesn't die at all you lose", the demon sums up happily."Deal", you grit out.
The cold swirls inside you, chaining every muscle in place."And I'll keep my eyes on you. In case another demon or Akaza himself will try to kill you I'll be faster, I promise", he adds with a wink.
Despite the fact that he just told you that he'll stalk you for months you blink as if to agree.
This is the only way, you tell yourself. The demon grins once again like a clown.
"Wonderful. I never would have thought to make a contract with my dinner but I'm always up for something new."Once again the term dinner triggers a wave of disgust in you.
The demon rises and disappears out of your field of view.
You try to stand up but the cold keeps shackling you to the ground."Oh", the demon's voice comes from somewhere, "the sun will help you out of your miserable situation. I promise I won't freeze you anymore."
And like that the demon leaves, giggling like a child. And you stay there waiting for a mountain lion or bear to smell your fear as it suddenly returns.
***
Partnered with the sunrise comes crisp and fragrant air. Your hunger turns out to be your new enemy in spite of the only slowly returning ability to move.
Somehow you didn't become the meal of another demon or an animal over night. Perhaps what the rainbow demon said about Akaza's smell wasn't false. Then again why couldn't the Hashiras notice it? You know the rumors about Tanjirou's nose. It doesn't add up.
Weak and exhausted you sit up and begin to carefully rise. The feeling and warmth crawls into your limbs and head at the speed of a snail.
You ignore the realization that starts to hit you. You don't want to think about any demon. Any bet, anything apart from your break.
Break, break, break.
You repeat it over and over again to stop your thoughts from drifting back to the rainbow demon.
Break. A step.
Break. Another one.
Break. You fix your eyes on the path in front of you.***
The sun is setting as you fiddle with your keys to open your front door. No one in your town questioned your absence. Of course they didn't. They all thought you were busy saving their lives. Little do they know that you partied, internally froze, almost got eaten, made a stupid bet and survived.
A small portion of pride flows through your veins only to be suffocated by the extent of your remorse.
You're gonna regret this stupid bet so much. So so much. You don't know why you would expect something else but when you enter your house everything is in the exact same place as you left it in. In spite of this you don't think yourself safe in here. Akaza knows that you live here. Why wouldn't he enter?
