It's been an hour since you set foot onto the clearing and started to wait for Akaza.
Usually you wouldn't wait for someone - especially a demon - to decide whether to ignore you or not.

Or would you?
If Rengoku would have been the one to decide would you have waited for him?
Definitely.
Shit.
Are you this down bad?

But it's different with Akaza. You don't want his fury upon you. It has nothing to do with not wanting to disappoint him and so on. The only reason you're playing his game is to survive. And to eventually kill him.

The moon crawls with astonishingly slow pace across the dark sky.
Your heart is beating rapidly due to the stress. The reason for your anxiety isn't Akaza's possible bad mood. It's the fact that you sent your Kasugai Crow to Oyakata-sama a few hours ago holding a certain message: That you will go on missions again.

Of course this can mean that your first mission could take place in two weeks. It's not every day that a demon gets spotted in the area you're responsible for. But there is a chance that you could receive a message tomorrow.
And you're mentally not ready for that.

Akaza doesn't show up. The sun is about to rise in less than an hour. You wasted your whole night sitting on a boulder and staring at your reflection in a pond while listening to the cicadas and other animals of the night.

Wasted is the wrong term though. You had a lot of time to overthink. Which isn't especially good and didn't prepare you for anything. But now you theoretically know how to react in every possible situation that could occur with your next mission. Which is particularly good if you are able to behave the way you wish you could.

On your way back home you plot all kinds of ways you're gonna revenge yourself. In case you would be stronger than Akaza of course. And in case you could be certain that he wouldn't torture you to death as a consequence.

When you enter your home you've calmed down a little. Your stomach grumbles with hunger although you didn't do anything that would justify it.

You decide to eat the onigiris you made yesterday and make a mental note to make new ones by the time you will be awake again.

Sighing you sit down on your kitchen table - there's only space for two people which is why you barely use it. You don't like to get reminded of your loneliness - and devour three onigiris.

The memory of what you have done comes back up. The Kasugai Crow. The letter.
You'll be on missions again. Facing demons. Cruel ones that won't care about the way you stand or whether you withstand their punches.

A shudder crawls along your skin.
Maybe you should have waited for another week.

A knock on the door interrupts your thoughts, though knocking would be understated. It's an aggressive pounding that makes you worry about your door.

Who could this be?
Your smith once again?

With your katana close by you sneak to your front door and carefully open it.

A smug grin of pointed teeth greets you.
"Missed me?", Akaza asks while looking down on you, arms crossed.

Your heart beat slows down which generally isn't very useful when facing an Upper Moon.

"What do you want? And make it quick no one may see you here", you spat and frantically look for your nosy neighbors' eyes.

Akaza's voice is gentle when he responds.
