Letter to Dubai

Dear Dubai,

I write to you today
          to thank you
For everything

I would not be
          who I am
          where I am
Without you
          your nurturing

You made me believe
Believe anything is possible
          if you believe
Because my mother saw a city rise out of the desert
Because my father felt the first drop of rain
And I
          I hear the laughter

You made me open
Showed me cultures from all corners of the world
Showed me beauty
          true beauty
          beauty irrespective of size, colour, gender
Taught me to not fear difference
          to accept it
          to love it
          to be curious about it

I thought I'd travel the world
          see the sights
But ultimately
          ultimately
You called me back

So here I am
          again
Writing to you
          to thank you
