"Are ya sure ya want to meet my parents?" I asked Odessa.
"Yeah. I'd love to meet your folks," she said. "Why? D-Did ya have a rough time with your parents?"
"K-Kinda."
"Is that why ya don't really talk about 'em?"
"Y-Yeah."
"We don't have to go then, princess," she said.
I nodded and hugged her, "T-Thank you, Dez."
"If ya don't mind me askin'," she began. "What was your relationship like with your parents?"
"Strict."
"Strict?"
"Yes. Had to be in bed by a certain time, which was way too early for me. I couldn't have a certain number of friends over because of the noise level we'd make, which constricted me from making friends. They were also very strict with who I let inside the house. While I was mostly with other girls, they didn't want a boy in the house, regardless if we were friends or not. They didn't let me date until I was eighteen and that was the first time I was allowed a boy inside the house."
"They didn't know you weren't interested in guys?"
"Heaven forbid they know," I let out a sigh.
"Is that another reason as to why ya don't want to go visit 'em?"
"Yes," I whispered. "I-I don't know how'd they react to me bein' married to ya. They weren't necessarily hateful towards those kinds of people, but there was a strong dislike to 'em."
"I understand, princess. So they were just really strict?"
"Yes. And I couldn't fight back against their word. I just had to take it. I did chores every day and if I messed up, I'd be grounded for a few days."
"I'm sorry to hear that, princess."
"That's why I left as soon as I could."
"Where do they live?"
"Very far from 'ere. Not in the outbacks."
"I see."
"However," I let out a sigh.
"Yeah?"
"There is something important comin' up soon and they always invite me to it. They invited me even after I moved and sent them a letter on where I was living."
"What is the event?"
"Family reunion," I sighed.
"Ya don't have to go if ya don't want to."
"I need to go. I never missed one."
"What will happen if ya do?"
"Nonstop berating."
She shook her head, "Ya don't deserve any of that anxiety, princess."
"I know, but I need to go."
"I understand."
A few days had passed since that conversation and lo and behold, there was an envelope on the front door with my name written on it. It was fancy cursive and the signature family stamp that sealed the envelop closed. While Odessa knew my family was strict, I didn't want her to know that it was partly due to my family being wealthy. Stepping into the house, I opened up the envelope and already knew what was awaiting me.
"Y/N,
It's been so long since we've heard from you, dear. As you know, our big family reunion is coming up and we'd love for you to join us. Your family would love to hear what you've been up to these past ten years. Same place as always and same attire as always. Hope to see you there. And if you have a husband, please bring him along! The family would love to meet him!
