Never Let Go

I clung onto her as she ran through the blazing streets of Junkertown. The omnics had never gotten this bad, but with it being such an arid summer and everything was dry, we were in danger of a fire eventually. I just didn't think it would get this bad. Everyone had evacuated from the areas where the fire was pretty bad, such as the northern and eastern parts. New Junk City wasn't affected at all, but most of them had come this way to help with the evacuations as well as putting out the fires. They were just blazing right now. There was no end to them. And the infrastructure of Junkertown and New Junk City was terrible, especially with houses literally on top of one another. And Odessa had taken the worst of it. There were burns on her back, her one eye was swollen shut from getting hit by an omnic, and her arms and legs had cuts on them. I was unscathed, as she was shielding me from literally everything.

As we were running towards the western part of the town, closer to New Junk City, she had tripped over some debris. She fell to her knees, but not once did she let me go. About to get up, some wooden planks above her fell.

"Odessa!"

"Shit!"

She checked to make sure my head was covered before she covered hers. The wood fell on top of her and she shook it off, slowly getting up.

"You can't go on like this," I said.

"We're nearly there," she breathed out.

"The smoke is gonna kill ya."

"I-I'll be fine," she finally got to her feet, now limping towards the eastern wall. Since there was no gate over there, she had to go inside the wall, up, and then down another flight of stairs that would lead out to the Wasteland. It was a shitty design for there to be only one main entry, but there were always side and back doors.

We reached the eastern wall and she slowly made her way up the stairs that would lead up. Her breathing was heavy and rough, coughing here and there.

"Ya alright, darlin'?" she asked.

"I'm fine," I said, still clinging onto her. "B-But you're not alright."

"I'll be fine," she wheezed.

The door swung open and she took in a deep breath, coughing as she did so. She stumbled her way across the wall. I looked down and some people had made it out and their wounds were getting tended to. She can't go on like this. Especially with the injuries she had suffered.

"Watch out!"

She turned right as an omnic jumped towards her. She pushed it aside, but it grabbed onto my leg, dragging me towards the inside part of the wall.

"Dez!"

She clenched her jaw, grabbed my hand, and fell onto the wall. I was dangling with an omnic clawing at me to get up and at her. She removed her axe from her back and dug it into the metal, anchoring her in place as she struggled to lift me up. I think the omnic adding extra weight wasn't helping, not to mention it was clawing at me. I squeezed my eyes shut and gritted my teeth together as blood started to seep out from the claw marks.

"D-Dez," I breathed out.

"I got ya," she huffed. "I-I ain't ever lettin' ya go, darlin'."

"Ya have a city to run."

"I can't run it without ya," she grunted, sweat lining her forehead now.

The fire was getting closer and the remaining omnics had made their way to where we were. I took in a deep breath.

"I know this is a hard decision."

"Shut your mouth right now, Y/N!" she scolded. "Don't ya dare even think about that."
