I woke up in the small opening of the field where we were supposed to wait for the final selection to begin. My eyes fluttered open, and I saw the blue sky above me with a tint of yellow. I pressed my hands against the futon that Kanae and I had shared that night, looking over to where she had slept, realizing she was no longer there. I wondered where she was for a moment before a soft voice pulled me back into my consciousness. Looking ahead of me, I could see Kanae brewing breakfast.

In the distance, I was able to see the two boys, Sabito and Tomioka, who I had learned were also waking up. Upon realizing that their camp seemed to have little food, I averted my eyes from them and looked up to Kanae, who was concentrated on stirring a pot of what looked to be miso soup for breakfast.

'Would it be okay if I asked both of those boys to join us?' I asked her. She looked at me and shot me a cheerful, closed-eyed smile. "Of course, I think I might have enough for everyone, anyways. I would be happy to get to know them as well," she replied.

With Kanae's warm approval, I approached Sabito and Tomioka, who were beginning to stir in their camp. It wasn't long before the five of us were sitting together, sharing a meal and stories. Breakfast became a time of bonding, as we exchanged laughter, our reasons for embarking on this journey, and our hopes for the future.
