The next morning, my mom calls me to give me a friendly reminder that I need to set up a "meet the parents" date with my fiancé. "He'll probably change his mind about a future with me after he meets her," I say to myself and chuckle. Don't get me wrong, I love my mom. But, she can be overbearing.
"Jaen? Jaen? Jaen Joo-suteki Moshiin, are you listening to me?!?!" her voice suddenly pierced through my thoughts, snapping me back to reality. Whoops, I guess I checked out again.
"And have you started your dress search yet?"
"Mother, we don't even have a date yet. He literally proposed to me a week ago. We need some time to just take everything in. Why rush?"
Her sigh on the other end of the line is audible; dripping with exasperation. "I supposed the cancer should just take its time spreading, Jaen?"
My breath catches in my throat, and for a moment, I'm paralyzed by her words. The sharp pang of hurt slices through me, leaving a bitter taste in my mouth. I struggle to find my voice, to push back against the wave of guilt and frustration rising within me.
"That was a low blow, even for her," I mutter under my breath, clenching my fists in frustration.
