And Manjhi came to mount resent
For time too long the man had spent
To save his bride though men did deem
It strange resenting mindless thing.

And great petition Manjhi gave
To have a road through mountain made
But none would deign to hear his plea
Nor any words he spoke did heed.

For engines made of steel and tin
With strength of more than forty men
Were deemed too meager force to do
The task that Manjhi would imbue

Their metal forms though strongly wrought
Were still to weak for thing he sought.
But still for aid did Manjhi search
Intent to others spare his hurt.

And none was found though long the quest
That man's resolve had come to test.
And pause absent the rest it gives
When other men on shoulder's bids

The thing alight, for mind did act
In leu of form and reserves taxed
So thoughts on wife did weary form
For sake of mind the body's worn,

Did come exhausting man in sleep
As even deep in dream he seeks
A way to lend to wife his help
Who past all mortal aid now dwelt.

And man despaired his heart in pain
To think her death had been in vain
Then came a thought no one can say
If either sense or madness made

Perhaps the fault for which I claim
For seldom I can tell these twain
A longing heart and raving mind
For oft this pair you both will find

In single person also made
Indistinct by role they play
And thus alike in function seem
With all misfortune both may bring...

On mountain man with hammer smote
His will or rock be thing that's broke
So man, perhaps by misplaced wrath,
Through mountain side does carve a path

And many men did scorn and jeer
As work did stretch throughout the years
But every day he effort gave
And slowly progress small was made

And thus to chore his strength he plied
In memory of his long dead bride.
Then came an eve when village gleans
No one that day had Manjhi seen.

So those who think his age yet ranged
And also deem him very strange
Suspect some hurt on man's befell
When out amongst the rocks he dwelled.

So forth they went to where he worked
Through many years and several hurts.
Surprised at start of road he made
That man with not but arm had paved.

And as they went amazement grew
When wall of stone their eyes construed
Above their heads that high did raise
Along the road that Manjhi laid

Who out of love had carved a path
By splitting mountain clean in half!!!

And on they wound along that road
By chisel carved from very stone
Until at end of trail there paved
They found his form and hammer laid.

His hair was grey and eyes did stare
At nothing only empty air
And far away did Manjhi seem
As though awake the man did dream

Untouched by all at present bare
Beyond at time a worldly care.
And Manjhi spoke before his death
Falguni's name his final breath...

A real picture of the road he made.
