PICTURE OF ZANE ------>

I stared at the bowl of fruit in front of me, still as stone. I was afraid that if I even moved in the wrong way that it would dissipate into nothing. I flashed my eyes up to the one who now owned me, Zane.

He stared back, confused. “What’s wrong?” I remained silent for several moments before looking down at the food in front of me once more, biting my lip. “You can eat.” He said gently after realizing what I was asking.

I immediately grabbed for it, not too eagerly but eager enough to show that it hadn’t been recently that I had eaten. I barely tasted the sweet tang of the different fruits as they were sent down to my screaming stomach. Once I finished I backed away as he reached towards it, not wanting any physical contact. He paused with his hand out stretched before gently setting the bowl aside from where I sat on the huge bed. He was silent as he moved forward slowly and positioned himself to sit in front of me. I tensed.

“I’m not going to do anything, I promise.” He said softly.

I didn’t relax at his words, I knew better, one promise led to another but it was always the same. They were always broken. He outstretched his hand after a moment and I flinched backward entirely, moving a few more feet away.

He sighed. “You can trust me.” He said gently his eyes determined and slightly saddened.

I remained tense as he reached out once more, trying my best to remain on the spot. I decided that if he really wanted to touch me he would have already. He was a vampire, he could have easily over powered me in an instant and the fact that he hadn’t gave me a little more confidence. I closed my eyes as his cold skin touched mine gently, stroking down my jaw.

“There see? I won’t hurt you, no one will as long as I’m around.” He said gently.

My eyes were downcast and I refused to remove them from my lap to meet his gaze. “Why are you doing this?” He remained frozen as if in shock and I looked up. “Why are you being so nice? You don’t have any reason to be, I’ve certainly done nothing to deserve it.”

His cerulean eyes became saddened suddenly. He sighed. “My race has grown to depend on humanity over the past century, it’s horrible and everything that vampires shouldn’t be. For thousands of years we were beautiful hunters, the ones who put the meaning in grace poise. Now we are nothing but vile murders.” I remained silent, I didn’t know what to say. “Anyway I would like to know what they did to you.”

I flinched. “Why does it matter? It’s all in the past anyway.” I asked, trying desperately to avoid that subject above all else.

“It matters because I want to know who I need to take care of. I’ve seen a lot of mortals enter this place but I’ve never seen one so scared, as if one wrong move will result in death.” he said softly.

I kept my lips closed tightly, not looking up at him. I felt fear in the very memory of Harold or that place. I felt nothing but terror at the very mention of a vampire. I wanted nothing more than to crawl into a hole and disappear with how my life was leading itself.
