Jaylin (Jay) Azaire Carter

I sat in the holding cell waiting for Lyric. Jackson told me he'd call her but as long as it was taking I felt like she wouldn't come. I ignored the woman behind me on the bench who continually flirted with me until I couldn't anymore.

"Bitch shut the fuck up." I turned to look at her. She rolled her eyes and shot a stank face at me and I turned back around hoping she'd leave me alone. I was shaking. I don't know why Justin thought he was going to talk about my dead mom and get away with it. I ain't never cared about a bond or a cell but I will dog you out about my family.

A fat white man in a uniform came to the cell with keys grabbing the attention of everyone. This man couldn't catch me if I jogged to a Dunkin' Donuts. Why do they hire people who failed the mile in high school?

"Jaylin Carter." He unlocked the cell and I stepped out he uncuffed me walking me up to the release desk. I was still shaking from the incident at work and my uniform was cover in welding dust despite me not even working half of my shift yet. Lyric was standing on the other side of the heavy metal door staring at her phone. I signed paperwork and gathered my things as they unlocked the door. I walked passes Lyric and out the door holding it for her.

"Jay." She said following me as I found her car in the parking lot.

"Thanks Lyric but I don't really want to talk right now." I was upset no confusion about that. My day had started off bad and it had only gotten worse from there on out. I waited for her to unlock the car but it never came. She was leaning on the back door looking at me. "Can you just unlock the door please?" I mumbled lowly and she sighed.

"What happened?" She asked me and I shook my head. She unlocked the car reluctantly and got in the drivers side. "I already know, Jackson—"

"Then why are you asking if you know?" I looked at her then back at my hands that were shaking, covered in a black dust like my uniform was.

"Because I want YOU to talk to me not Jackson." She said starting the car and pulling off.

"You're not my girlfriend Lyric don't put too much time and effort into acting like it." I told her coldly avoiding eye contact. She sighed and focused on the road not saying much. I checked the time it was 4pm now, I could see if I could go back to work but with the mood I was in I doubt they'd even let me come back today. I decided I'd clean up and cook and drink instead. As Lyric pulled into my apartment complex she slowed down. She parked  in front of my building and watched me. I didn't move quite yet. My head was filled with negativity and nothing but reminders of my mom's death. I felt my eyes swell with tears but pushed them back as I hated to cry in front of people but especially Lyric. She was my best friend but she thought I was stronger than I was and I don't want her to think anything less of it.

"Can I come in with you?" She asked me as I focused on the stairs out the window to the right of me. I shrugged. Sometimes I wanted to just let it out and yell and scream and let her be there for me and other times she's the last person I wanted to vent to. This time I couldn't tell what I should do. I was not emotional person but when it came to my mom I couldn't help it.

"Whatever you want." I got out of the car and started walking upstairs. I could hear the car turn off and her door close as she followed me. I unlocked the door and took my boots off holding the door for her. I locked it behind her and stripped my uniform off as I always do at the door. "I need to take a quick shower" I mumbled and she nodded taking her shoes off. I grabbed a pair of gray sweats, socks, and a tank top before heading to the bathroom. I started the shower and finished undressing before getting in.
